Listen to John Mann's episode of My Playlist

With heavy hearts, we've been remembering John Mann, the Spirit of the West frontman who died in Vancouver on Nov. 20 at the age of 57. He'd been suffering from Alzheimer's disease since 2014.

Prior to his diagnosis, Mann hosted an episode of My Playlist on CBC Music, playing some of his favourite songs and sharing anecdotes from his career.

"One of our favourite musical friends in the U.K. is Billy Bragg," recalled Mann during the episode, while introducing a song by Bragg. "I remember we were playing at Glastonbury Festival, and there was this area only allowed for performers. I was sitting there, and looked over, and was like, 'Oh my God, that's Van Morrison.' And Billy Bragg came up to me and I said, 'Bill, that's fricking Van Morrison!' And he said, 'Yeah, I know.' And I said, 'I gotta talk to him,' and Bill said, 'Don't do it.' [But] I went up to him and told him, 'I love your band,' and he told me to eff off. [Laughs] So, what do you do?"

Mann also explained how Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" helped him get settled in his new home. "This was the song I chose to sweep out all the cobwebs in the house. I literally played it five times in a row. And then I thought, 'OK, now I own this house.'"
