Watch the Junos celebrate the 30th anniversary of the rap recording of the year award
The superstar performance included Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, Maestro Fresh Wes and more
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Juno Awards, but there was another important milestone to commemorate: the 30th anniversary of the Junos' rap recording of the year category.
Introduced in 1991, when Maestro Fresh Wes won the inaugural prize for Symphony in Effect, this category has had a complicated history, as this year's presenter Michie Mee says: "The Junos hasn't always gotten hip hop right." (For example, in 1998, the Rascalz protested their win because the award wasn't televised.)
But as Mee notes, this year they've been given a platform to "tell the real story" of Canadian hip hop on the Junos stage, from Wes's big win to the genre's dominance today thanks to superstars like Drake.
