The Juno Awards will have an even longer list of winners next year thanks to the addition of five new categories.

Starting in 2022, rap recording of the year will be split into two new awards: rap album/EP of the year and rap single of the year. Last night, at the opening night gala, the rap recording of the year award went to Tobi for his 2020 album, Elements Vol. 1.

The Indigenous artist or group of the year will also be broken into two: contemporary Indigenous artist or group of the year, and traditional Indigenous artist or group of the year. This year's winner for Indigenous artist or group of the year is Leela Gilday for her album, North Star Calling. This decision to expand the category is similar to this year's new R&B/soul categories, which were also divided into traditional and contemporary recording of the year.

Finally, the Junos will introduce a new dance award for underground dance recording of the year. Currently, there is just the dance recording of the year, which went to Kaytranada's album, Bubba, last night.

It was also announced last night that the 2022 Juno Awards will return to Toronto, with plans for in-person events and celebrations.

The 2021 Juno Awards will be broadcast nationwide tomorrow, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBC-TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, globally on CBCMusic.ca/junos and live streamed on CBC Music's TikTokFacebookTwitter and YouTube pages.
