Sarah McLachlan's most cherished songwriting advice from Emmylou Harris and Annie Lennox
'It was just that little push that I really needed.'
Sarah McLachlan is one of Canada's most celebrated singer-songwriters. Certainly, she has given and received some great advice over the years.
When CBC Music spoke to McLachlan at the 2019 Juno Awards nominations press conference, McLachlan shared the best piece of songwriting advice that she'd ever gotten. Interestingly enough, these wise words came from not one, but two of her peers: Emmylou Harris and Annie Lennox.
So, what was it? "To stay true to myself, to follow my gut, to follow through with an idea that feels right and good, and don't let anybody deter or stop me," she explained. "I already knew it, but I was feeling a lot of pressure to go a different way and just saying that to me was like, 'Of course, you're absolutely right; thank you for that.' It was just that little push that I really needed and I am extremely grateful for both of them."
