Jess Moskaluke covers Shawn Mendes' "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" for CBC Music's Junos 365 Sessions.

As part of our coverage of the 2019 Juno Awards, we're inviting some of today's hottest Canadian acts to cover a past winner in the single of the year category.

In today's session, Saskatchewan's Jess Moskaluke has chosen to cover a song that she's been thinking of doing for years: Shawn Mendes' 2018 single of the year winner, "There's Nothing Holdin' me Back."

"I think it's a really powerful song and it's also got such intricate, interesting, challenging melodies," Moskaluke explained.

The Juno-winning country artist says there was a time in her life when she was "putting a YouTube cover out every seven to 14 days," but she hasn't been doing them as much lately. So she thought this session was as good an opportunity as any to finally cover Mendes' hit.

"I think it's a good exercise as a creative mind and as an artist to cover something that you haven't written and hear it done one way and then be like, OK, that's cool, how can we twist it and make it our own while still respecting what the artist or the writer had intended?" Moskaluke said. "Obviously when you're doing a male song as a female, it automatically is going to sound a little bit different, so we didn't have to do a whole lot. But I did want to strip it back a little bit and keep it kind of acoustic."
