Junos 365 session: Watch the Weather Station cover Old Man Luedecke's 'Wake up Hill'
Past Juno stars cover fellow winners in London — the future home of the Junos.
As part of CBC Music's Junos 365 London sessions — where Juno winners and nominees cover a past Juno winner — the Weather Station chose to cover Old Man Luedecke's "Wake up Hill," from his Juno-winning album Proof of Love.
It was Old Man Luedecke's poetic and thoughtful lyrics that drew the Weather Station's Tamara Lindeman to this song. The 2018 Juno nominee calls it, "such a specific melancholy that I understand." The Weather Station performed this cover at Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church in London, Ont. — the 2019 Junos host city.
Below, Lindeman shares more about why she chose to cover this Old Man Luedecke tune.
Why did you choose this song to cover?
I heard it a long time ago and it kind of made me cry. It's such a specific melancholy that I understand. I relate to being someone whose mind is taking things apart and ruining things, which is what he's talking about. I think the words are really strong, poetic and thoughtful.
Was it difficult to take a traditional-sounding folk song and make it your own?
Part of why I chose this song is because it felt very natural to sing it, and very much like what I used to do. I wrote a lot of songs like that in the beginning. To me, his lyrics have never really been traditional, which is what I like about him. These lyrics are totally contemporary and thoughtful and not traditional at all.
