For the Village, the ’80s were a golden age. Activist Roger Leclerc, 71, remembers a time when pleasure reigned supreme. Alas, HIV/AIDS was to turn it all upside-down before the decade was out. The virus exacerbated any intolerance toward gay men. In the blink of an eye, Roger would lose his partner and all of his friends. But the epidemic roused the activist in him, as well as in Michael and others like Puelo Deir, today a prominent figure in the Montreal queer community. At the same time, homophobic murders were on the rise. Michael continued to add names to his victims’ list.
