Here's what you'll need:

  • Parchment paper
  • Oven-bake clay (can be found at art supplies stores)
  • Rolling pin
  • Lace doilies
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Knife
  • Acrylic paint, in colours of your choice
  • Paint brushes
  • High-gloss varnish
  • Sponges
  • Oven-safe plate

Here's how to do it:

  1. Lay your parchment paper flat on the surface you'll be working on, then lay your clay disk on top and begin rolling it out until you get a circle about ¼ inch thick.
  2. Take one of your lace doilies, soak it in water until it is fully damp and ring out any excess liquid. This process will help ensure that your doily doesn't stick to the clay.
  3. Carefully lay doily over your rolled-out clay, and use the rolling pin to flatten the doily into the clay, until they are level with one another. Slowly peel the doily off. You should now see the pattern from your doily clearly imprinted in the clay.
  4. Place a bowl bottom side up in the middle of your clay circle and begin tracing along the bowl's edges with a knife. This will make the edges of your dish nice and clean. Once you've gone all the way around, lift up the bowl and peel away any excess clay.
  5. Optional: if you want your dish to have scalloped edges, begin carving out long triangles along the edges of your clay, working around in a circle until you've covered the entire circumference. Remove any excess clay.
  6. Dip a sponge in water and go around the edges of your clay with it, smoothing them out.
  7. Now it's time to bake your clay! Heat oven to 275F degrees and bake for 15 minutes per ¼ inch. If you want your dish to stay flat, place the clay and parchment on an oven-safe plate before baking. If you want the edges of your dish to curl up, place the clay and parchment into a bowl and gently push in into the bowl.
  8. Once your dish is cooled and out of the oven, begin painting the front and back surfaces in the colour of your choice (we used grey) until your dish is completely covered. Let dry. Now use a second colour (we used white) to paint only the raised sections of your dish. This will highlight all the interesting textures that the lace pattern provides. Let dry.
  9. Using a paint brush, apply a coat of high-gloss varnish to the entire dish. Let dry.
