Make these marbled dishes for any room in your home or for the most impressive gift
Ever start the morning with a nice, clean dresser only to have it covered with every piece of jewelry you own by the time you've finished putting your daily look together? Well, these DIY marbled dishes are your ticket to a space so organized, even Marie Kondo would approve. They're delicate, chic and perfect for collecting all your favourite knick knacks. From jewelry, to paper clips, to lucky pennies, you'll want to make one of these dishes for every room in the house. Bonus: they're just the right combo of customizable and easy-to-make that they'll make great gifts for housewarmings and birthdays, too!
Here's what you'll need:
- 3 colours polymer clay
- Rolling pin
- Cutting board (or another hard surface)
- Craft knife
- Small oven safe bowl
- Liquid gold leaf
- Paintbrush
Here's how to do it:
Grab two small squares of polymer clay in 3 colours. Each square should be about the size of a baby carrot. Use your fingers to roll out each square to form a long strip of clay.
Take two different colour clay strips and twist one around the other. Then take the whole piece, fold it in half, and roll it out again. Add the other colours of clay and repeat the twist and roll until you have one large multicolour clay swirl.
Roll the clay swirl into a ball and use a rolling pin to flatten the clay out to an even 5mm width. Be sure to roll out on a hard surface and make sure the width of the clay is nice and even all the way across.
Use an oven-safe bowl (like ceramic or pyrex) to create a makeshift cookie cutter by placing it face down on your clay. Use a craft knife to cut around the edge of the bowl to remove excess clay and make a perfect circle.
Carefully lift the clay circle and lay on the inside of the bowl. Don't lift too fast or pull too hard or you might alter the shape of your carefully cut circle. It's such a great multi-purpose tool to use the oven safe bowl because does it work as a shape mold for your bowls, but it also creates a perfect dish mold for your ring dish while it bakes.
Bake the clay at 120°F for 15 minutes. Set them aside to cool after they come out of the oven. You can even pop the bowls in the refrigerator for a few minutes to help set the clay.
When the bowls have completely cooled, use a brush to paint liquid gold leaf around the rim to add a touch of shine.
