Time for a trim? The top women's hair trends to try for fall
From a drastic to cut to a change in your part, here's how to refresh your locks if you're in a rut
In a survey that was released in 2017 by an American beauty company, 68% of women revealed that they're unhappy with their hair, and 80% said that their hair affects how they're feeling (not surprising!). A recent Stanford Graduate School of Business study confirms that having a good hair day can directly improve your mood, and potentially even change your life.
In any case, whether you're sick of your hairstyle and want a drastic change, or like your cut as-is but simply want to try a different styling technique for the day, we've got you covered. Here are some of the top hair trends of-the-moment, and how you can wear them for fall.
Micro bangs
Like so many '90s-inspired trends, baby bangs are back. As seen on celebrities like Zendaya and Constance Wu, when done right micro bangs frame your face beautifully and adds structure and drama. The tricks to pulling off this challenging trend for fall? Making sure they're at least a few inches long, and embracing the natural wave and texture of your hair rather than trying for perfectly sleek bangs.
A centre part
It's surprising how much of a difference your hair part can have on your cut and look. Spotted at fall/winter 2018 fashion week shows like Tory Burch and Brandon Maxwell, and recently on the red carpet on celebrities including Anna Kendrick and Nicki Minaj, the humble centre part suddenly looks fresh whether your hair is done up or left down. Just note: using a fine-tooth comb to get a neat part is essential.
The blunt bob
When even Kim Kardashian (temporarily) switches out her long waves for a monochromatic blunt bob, you know it's gotta be one of the hottest cuts of the season. As sported by actress Emilia Clarke, the look is a sleek, no layer hairdo that dries in minutes and can be styled with a centre part or sleeked back with some volume. It can be a low-maintenance style for every day, but you can also use a flat iron for a super-straight finish that emphasize the sleekness of the cut.
A messy bun
The go-to style for Meghan Markle, and worn by all the models on the fall/winter 2018 runway at Chanel, the messy bun is back for both day and formal occasions. The key to making this seemingly-simple style look more interesting for right now? Going very high, adding plenty of volume and texture, and making sure some wispy ends stick out for a nonchalant finish.
The perm
Trust us, the techniques and chemical formulations behind perms have evolved significantly in the last few decades. If you have stick-straight or very fine hair, a loose perm à la Emma stone can give you that volume and movement to make beachy waves or a tousled bob a reality without causing too much frizz or damage. Really.
Neon hair
Ok, so this last trend is not for everyone. But we keep spotting super bright, neon coloured stresses on the runway at Marc Jacobs, and on celebs like Katy Perry and Sza. Not sure if you're ready to commit? A short wig or temporary dye creates the look just as well for one night only.
