No-fuss hair, freshest skin, pink lids and more beauty trends from New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019
Did we say pink? Pink and more pink, from hair to lashes to lids to lips.
New York Fashion Week is a breeding ground for the next big trends in beauty. Backstage, as the pros get to work, the editors follow their every move and take notes. What was clear from the Spring/Summer 2019 shows was that runway beauty doesn't always have to be so serious. In can be theatrical, yet personal, and still achievable at home. Follow along as we recap the coolest hair, makeup, and nail trends of the next season.
The new natural
The whole "you do you" way of life officially applies to your hair this season. "With this new natural [trend], the most luxurious thing is almost not to bother with your hair, but it still looks great," said Redken global creative director Guido Palau backstage at Longchamp. "We did a few little things to make it look richer, but in each girl's case we tried to keep her personality," he continued. The idea of working with hair's texture and sticking to natural styles was also big at shows like Claudia Li, and at Coach, which was all about natural texture with a bit of edge. Models at Prabal Gurung embraced the au naturel with their hair simple cornrows and fresh blowouts.
More pink than Barbie
If SS19 is about one colour, and it's pink, pink and more pink. The shade was everywhere. It was dewy and natural on lips and cheeks at shows like Rachel Zoe and Michael Kors, and it was bright and dramatic when James Kaliardos used NARS shadows to paint graphic cat eyes on models' eyelids at Rodarte. Perhaps most memorable was Ulla Johnson, who kept models' makeup pretty barefaced, but coated their lashes in electric pink mascara. If we're used to saying "pretty in pink," currently we're saying there's no such thing as too much.
Punched up nails
Nails usually go one of two ways: OTT or straight-up solid colours, and this season's most talked about looks were definitely the former. At Alice + Olivia a team of KISS Product nail pros lead by Miss Pop chose from four Impress press-on set designs, including one of designer Stacey Bendet's face. Over at Adeam the makeup may have been simple but the long, bedazzled nails were anything but. A case for nail piercings came up at Priscavera where transparent nails were pierced with jewels, and again at Chromat with hole-punched periwinkle nails with silver rings. And in a fitting tribute to Kate Spade's famous saying "She left a little sparkle wherever she went," Julie Kandalec dabbed small flecks of essie glitter all over nails.
Fresh-faced
Barely-there makeup is a trend that seems to pop up season after season. The reason? It's so flattering. For SS19, we saw the look again and again at some of our fave shows, including Jonathan Simkhai, where Canadian Maybelline New York pro Grace Lee went for a fresh-faced look. Backstage at Tibi, the artists let models' faces appear bare save for some black liner tracing their waterlines. Same goes for Pamella Roland, and at Escada where bare skin offered a stark contrast to dialed up red lips.
Garden goddess
Flowers have always played a part in the Mulleavy sister's presentations at Rodarte. This year, they took the trend to the next level. Models at the show had their hair adorned with elaborate fresh rose headpieces in shades of pink and peach that called to mind a fairy-tale world. They weren't the only ones who wanted to do something fresh. At Mansur Gavriel select models had their hair dotted with quaint yellow flowers to counterpoint their contemporary runway styles.
