The 10 best looks from the 2020 Golden Globes

The 77th annual Golden Globe awards — hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais for the fifth time — featured a star-studded lineup, and a much livelier and more interesting array of red-carpet looks than in recent years.  

There were a few trends that proved quite popular: men in all-black tuxedo looks; unexpectedly simple ponytails on actresses such as Joey King, Awkwafina and Kaitlyn Dever; gowns with plunging necklines; and tux-inspired black-and-white dresses (see: Cynthia Erivo). And, it was great to see some of the evening's biggest stars try out quirky, risk-taking fashion choices — Gwyneth Paltrow in brown Fendi and Kerry Washington's sexy Altuzarra look, for example — that made for an anything-but-dull red-carpet scene.   

Here are my top ten:

Joey King

Best Actress-nominee Joey King, attending her very first Golden Globes awards, looked stunning in a graphic Iris van Herpen dress, Harry Winston jewelry and Jimmy Choo shoes. I love the trompe-l'œil effect of the dress, from van Herpen's Fall 2019 couture collection, and how King kept her beauty look super simple to place the emphasis on the gown's intricate folds — even her nails featured matching graphic black lines. 

Awkwafina

Wearing a Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2019 ensemble and Forevermark jewelry, the American star of The Farewell made history by becoming the first woman of Asian descent to garner a best actress win at the Golden Globes. It's about time! 

Billy Porter 

Billy Porter's unconventional, dramatic red-carpet looks are a delight to see. For the Globes, the actor wore an all-white tuxedo ensemble by designer Alex Vinash; according to one report, the look required 4,000 Swarovski crystals and took over 465 hours to make. Oh, and that fabulous, feather-embellished train easily zips off.  

Michelle Williams 

Michelle Williams, who won a Golden Globe for her role in Fosse/Verdon, made an incredibly moving acceptance speech championing the importance of women's right to choose — and the importance of voting "in your own self-interest". The actress, currently expecting her second child, wore Tiffany & Co. jewelry and a draped Louis Vuitton gown in a unique orange shade.  

Kaitlyn Dever 

Actress Kaitlyn Dever, celebrating her first Golden Globes nomination for Unbelievable, was radiant in a floral Valentino Haute Couture gown featuring dramatic puffed sleeves. Styled by Canadian fashion stylist Karla Welch, the look also included Jennifer Meyer jewelry and platform sandals by Montreal-based Aldo. 

Elaine Lui

Television host and celebrity-gossip expert Elaine Lui covered the Golden Globes red carpet in a pleated dress from Toronto-based fashion designer Lesley Hampton's Spring/Summer 2020 runway collection. Her all-Canadian glam team included hairstylist Matthew Collins, makeup artist Voula Zisis, and stylist Katie Tobin.

Jodie Comer 

Killing Eve's Jodie Comer, nominated in the Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama category, looked particularly regal in an emerald green, floor-length Mary Katrantzou gown featuring dramatic puffed sleeves (another favourite trend from the evening). Her dramatic, classic beauty look was created by Canadian makeup artist Hung Vanngo. 

Winnie Harlow

Jamaican-Canadian model Winnie Harlow sizzled in a custom-designed dress by designer Lacquan Smith and a ring from Toronto's Kilani Jewellery boutique. Beaded to look like fringe, the floor length, backless dress features a dramatic slit and plenty of shimmer. 

Phoebe Waller-Bridge 

The Fleabag creator looked radiant in a lace-trimmed Ralph & Russo suit with a tuxedo lapel, which she plans to auction off to support the fire crisis in Australia, and Christian Louboutin heels. In movement, the luxe fabric is slightly sheer and full of shimmer. 

Zoey Deutch 

A great jumpsuit is always a good idea, and actress Zoey Deutch's custom Fendi number definitely kept things interesting. Accessorized with statement jewels from Harry Winston, the bright yellow jumpsuit featured two of the evening's top trends together: puffed sleeves and a plunging neckline.
