It's time to retire the bomber and say hello to spring's new toppers!

Take on the season’s rollercoaster weather in 3 new takes on classic spring styles.

Take on the season’s rollercoaster weather in 3 new takes on classic spring styles.

It's March, which means we're officially ready to pack up our parkas. After a long, harsh winter, and months of Michelin Man-style cocooning, stashing our puffers away in a faraway closet sounds like a genius idea. But no matter how impatient we get, Mother Nature isn't necessarily going to deliver on our sun-soaked daydreams. Cue the transition jacket. Made for in-between weather days, these are the toppers you can turn to until you're ready to ditch your jacket altogether.

The trench coat is a forever favourite. Thanks to designers like Calvin Klein, Maison Margiela and Burberry, it's soaring to new heights with plaids, plastic-y finishes and even fluttery feathers (forget those boring tan versions). Same goes for the denim jacket. This year, look for styles with unexpected details. Brushstrokes of metallic paint, laced-up panels and mixed materials are all fair game. Finally, in the ever-expanding arena of athleisure, the anorak was poised for a comeback. Since leggings, sneakers and everything spandex have gone mainstream, it seems only fair to welcome the windbreaker back into the fashion fold. See our edit of all the best spring jackets below.

The Trench Coat

There's no need to fully retire your Inspector Gadget style, but isn't it time your tan trench got a runway-inspired makeover? For the most head-turning versions, turn to plastic-y patents or menswear checks. If you're brave enough to try it, we love the Massimo Dutti trench below worn with a matching suit.

The souped-up  jean jacket

Everyone's got a denim jacket kicking around the back of their closet; the reason it's been buried? It's lost that shiny, exciting veneer. Which explains why designers like Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen and Calvin Klein are taking it under their transformative wings. Let yours take centre stage this spring by choosing one with intricate embroidery, a pastel palette or biker edge.

The sporty anorak

It's not often that fashion and function meet at the same time. Spring's sporty anoraks are part raincoat and part windbreaker making them the ideal jacket for this time year, something that the Canadian designers from Mackage know all too well. Their tropical print coat is one of our absolute faves. On the international front, Mary Katrantzou and Valentino showed their versions with heels, but we're recommending keeping things grounded with a sleek sneaker.
