Dave Zachary was inspired by his father's work carving soapstone and now the Winnipeg artist is making a name for himself with his unique work.

Dave Zachary grew up watching his father work with soapstone and it wasn't long before he picked up the carving knife himself to follow in his footsteps.

Zachary says he wasn't taken seriously at first. People couldn't believe someone so young was creating art like his. After multiple rejections to display his work, Zachary says he set up his own online shop, where his work began to sell and attract accolades.

In this video directed by Andrew Wiens and Sam Karney and produced by CBC's Stephanie Matteis, Zachary recalls how he came to be Canada's own "Man of Stone," and how it was a tragedy in his life that pushed him to step up his art.

Watch Exhibitionists Sundays at 4:30pm (5 NT) on CBC.
