The jig is up: Watch this square dancer literally tear apart our set with his fancy footwork
Let Desmond Colombe give you a lesson in how to Red River Jig
Square dancer Desmond Colombe stopped by our CBC Arts studio to give us a master class in jigging — and he tore it up! No, he literally tore up our set with his fancy footwork. Our set is shredded and it was so worth it.
Colombe has been honing his dance skills since he was five years old, and he now dances competitively and teaches square dancing in Pimicikamak Cree Nation in Manitoba. In this video, he shows us the intricate steps of the traditional Red River Jig set to Kevin McKay's fiddle music.
It's actually something I grew up doing — something I love to do.- Desmond Colombe
So grab your fiddle or your dancing shoes (or both?!) and get jigging!
You can learn more about Colombe, McKay and their dance community in the CBC Short Doc Twilight Dancers (available to watch online here).
