Atlantic Canada sports update for the March 11 weekend

The weekend sports roundup for the Atlantic provinces from CBC's John Hancock includes what's coming up in curling, volleyball, ringette and hockey.

The national ringette playoffs get underway this weekend in Shediac, N.B.

Here's an update on Atlantic Canada sports.

Curling

Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs faced Newfoundland and Labrador's Brad Gushue this morning in the battle for top spot at the Brier in Ottawa.

Jacobs continued his unbeaten streak with a 4-1 win over Gushue, who is just a game back.

The two also meet tonight in the one versus two game, with the winner advancing right to the final and the loser dropping into the semifinal. Alberta and Manitoba have the other playoff spots clinched.

Chester, N.S.'s Mary Fay, along with teammates Kristin Clarke, Karlee Burgess and Janique Leblanc, clinched first place in women's play at the World Junior Curling Championship in Denmark going 8-0 in round-robin play.

Manitoba's Matt Dunstone, who beat Norway Friday morning, finished second in the men's behind the Americans with a 6-2 record.

Women's hockey

Jillian Saulnier of Halifax and Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton are teammates with the Calgary Inferno, who face Montreal's Les Canadiennes Sunday in the women's Clarkson Cup Championship.

The game will be played in Ottawa at the Canadian Tire Centre and televised nationally at 5 p.m. AT.

Ringette

The national ringette playoffs get underway this weekend. Atlantic Attack hosts Le Royal de Bourassa at 12:45 p.m. AT on Saturday in Shediac, N.B., at Festival Arena.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey

In Quebec Major Junior Hockey, Halifax Mooseheads host Moncton at the Scotiabank Centre. One more loss eliminates the Mooseheads from playoff contention. Charlottetown plays at Saint John and Cape Breton is at Bathurst.

Volleyball

The Dalhousie Tigers play their opening match of the CIS women's volleyball championship in Brandon, Man., against UBC Okanagan at 3:30 p.m. AT.

In the men's tournament in Hamilton, Ont., the UNB Varsity Reds lost in five sets to the University of Saskatchewan in their opening match yesterday. The Varsity Reds drop into the consolation round.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association women's volleyball championship continues today at Holland College in Charlottetown. The host Hurricanes and Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics both lost their opening matches.

The CCAA men's volleyball  championship kicked off yesterday with the St. Thomas University Tommies getting swept by the Red Deer College Kings.
