Police in central Newfoundland say they are investigating the discovery of human remains.

Remains were discovered early Wednesday in a wooded area near the town of Grand Falls-Windsor, RCMP said in a brief statement.

The RCMP said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been asked to help identify the body and to determine the cause of death.

Police provided no other details about the remains, but did say updates would be reported as the investigation continues.

Police and ground search crews had been combing the area as part of an ongoing investigation. A member of the ground search team discovered the remains, Vanessa Kearsey, an RCMP communications officer, said Thursday.
