Bundle up! Cold temperatures, blowing snow advisory in effect for Waterloo region

Thursday is going to be a cold day in Waterloo region with the high of -6 C. The region was under a blowing snow advisory Thursday morning with Environment Canada warning of westerly winds gusting up to 70 km/h. School buses were cancelled in Waterloo region and parts of Wellington County.

Grab the mittens and a scarf, because Thursday is expected to be a cold one and there's a blowing snow advisory in effect for Waterloo region.

The Environment Canada forecast says snow combined with westerly winds gusting up to 70 km/h are expected to create areas of blowing snow and poor visibility.

"The worst conditions are expected to the northwest of Kitchener over exposed areas. Winds will diminish somewhat this afternoon," the blowing snow advisory says.

"Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop."

The forecast for Waterloo region said Thursday would see a high of –6 C with a wind chill near –18.

Flurries are expected throughout the day and evening.

Friday, a mix of sun and cloud is expected with a chance of flurries in the morning and a high of –5 C.

School buses cancelled in Waterloo region

School buses were cancelled in Waterloo region but schools remained open.

School buses were running in Guelph and the southern part of Wellington County.

Buses were cancelled in the northern part of Wellington County and in Dufferin County. 

Northern Wellington County is under a snow squall warning with up to 20 cm expected by Friday. People are advised to postpone non-essential travel.
