The outgoing mayor of Port Coquitlam has failed in his attempt to win a seat on city council.

Scott Young announced in October that he wouldn't seek re-election as mayor, but would instead run for city council.

The news came after Young pleaded guilty in May to two charges of assault and one charge of breaching the conditions of an undertaking.

Many Port Coquitlam residents called for Young to step down after his plea, and council asked him to leave three times.

He temporarily stepped aside but returned to the mayor's chair a month and a half after the April 2007 incident.

He was first elected mayor in 2001.

The city's newly elected mayor is Greg Moore, who defeated fellow councillor Mike Bowen by over 1,000 votes.

Moore said Young's defeat was an important step for his community.

"We wanted the electorate to have the decision and have the voting power to say whether he should stay or not and, you know, this was a great point in our community so that the community can actually come out and have their say," Moore said.

City councillors are Sherry Carroll, Mike Forrest, Darrell Penner, Glenn Pollock, Brad West and Michael Wright.

School trustees are John Joseph Keryluk and Judy Shirra.
