A 41-year-old Cape Breton man is facing charges after a woman was struck by a vehicle this week in Portage, N.S.&nbsp;

According to a news release, RCMP responded to a call of a vehicle-pedestrian collision around 7:45 a.m. on&nbsp;May 6.

Police found a 30-year-old woman lying in a ditch with life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital.

The woman had been hit&nbsp;by a vehicle that&nbsp;police identified as a grey Dodge 3500 truck. The vehicle failed to remain at the scene.

The driver turned himself in later that morning and was arrested in Big Pond, N.S.

The man is scheduled to appear in Sydney provincial court on Aug. 7&nbsp;to face charges of&nbsp;aggravated assault and failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.

The Nature Trust of Nova Scotia says it has preserved an island in southwest Nova Scotia. It announced on Friday that Johns Island, just west of Central Woods Harbour, will provide 68 hectares of land to migratory birds.

Infant suffers life-threatening injuries in Hants County crash

RCMP say an infant has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash at a rural intersection in central Nova Scotia. The Mounties say the collision happened at the intersection of Highway 14 and South Rawdon Road shortly after 12 p.m. Thursday.
