Former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson has announced he will be running as the Liberal candidate for Vancouver Fraserview–South Burnaby in the upcoming federal election.
In a statement Sunday, Robertson said he had accepted an invitation to run from Liberal Leader Mark Carney, who officially launched the election earlier in the day.
"We're facing unprecedented, urgent, complex challenges — and there's no one better prepared to lead us through them than Prime Minister Mark Carney," his statement read.
The newly created riding largely replaces Vancouver South, currently held by outgoing Liberal MP Harjit Sajjan. Sajjan, a cabinet minister, announced in January that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed Robertson's candidacy.

Robertson's candidacy marks his return to politics after serving as Vancouver's mayor from 2008 to 2018. He also served as a New Democrat B.C. legislative member in the Vancouver-Fairview riding from 2005 to 2008.
The former mayor says he recently had been working on climate policy internationally with the United Nations and serving as global ambassador for the Global Covenant of Mayors.
