Police say they don't yet if the victim and suspect knew each other. A 30-year-old remains in hospital
Hamilton police say a 74-year-old man was stabbed and killed Sunday in his downtown home.
Moments after finding the man, officers shot and injured a 30-year-old man, who was armed with a knife, police said Monday. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario's police watchdog, has been called in to investigate.
Hamilton police say they responded to a call just before 4 p.m., Sunday, at an apartment building near Hunter Street East and Spring Street and found the victim injured on his porch.
Police have identified the victim as Charles James Francis Jouvence, who was known to friends and family as Jacques. Those close to him are "obviously devastated," said Det. Sgt. John Obrovac at a news conference Monday.
Jouvence was likely home alone beforehand and the suspect didn't live there, Obrovac said.
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been laid against the 30-year-old man, said Obrovac, but police called him a suspect. He remained in hospital Monday.
Police don't yet know the motive for the stabbing, if the victim and suspect knew each other, or the events leading up to the incident.
The SIU was called in to investigate the interaction between the suspect and police.
It said in a statement "one officer discharged his firearm and the man was struck." He "remains in hospital in serious, life-threatening condition," the SIU said Monday afternoon.
The SIU said four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Hamilton investigators or Crime Stoppers.
