Shooting near Highway 8 and Fruitland Road involved people in 'several' vehicles: police
A 16-year-old has died following the early-morning shooting in Stoney Creek on Thursday, Hamilton police say.
Around 4:20 a.m., police said, there was a shooting near Highway 8 and Fruitland Road involving people in "several" vehicles. When first responders arrived following a 911 call, they took a male with multiple gunshot wounds to hospital, where he later died.
Sixteen-year-old Faizaan Awan of York Region was being chased by several vehicles until his car, a red Acura, collided with a white Kia, police said.
"Multiple gunshots were then fired at the Acura. Several people then fled the area in cars and on foot leaving Faizaan behind at the scene," police said in a news release.
The area of the incident was closed for several hours on Thursday but has since reopened.
Police did not say on Thursday how many people were involved in the incident or how many remained at the scene following the shooting. They did say two vehicles remained there.
Spokesperson Adam Kimber told CBC Hamilton he was unable to be more specific, adding police were still looking for witnesses and surveillance footage.
"It is too early to tell specifically, but we believe the shooting is targeted," Kimber said in an email. "The suspects are still outstanding."
