A Winnipeg man has been charged with voyeurism after police say he took photos of a 10-year-old girl as she was changing in a fitness facility.
The Winnipeg Police Service was called to a multi-use fitness centre in the Grant Park area for a report of sexual assault on Saturday just before 5 p.m., a news release said on Monday.
The girl was changing in a private stall in a gender neutral change room when her father noticed a man was taking photos of her with his phone in the next stall over, police said.
The father notified staff who contacted police.
A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was later released on a court order prohibiting him from contacting individuals under 16 in public spaces such as parks, playgrounds or schools until a judge decides otherwise, said Const. Stephen Spencer with the police service.
Spencer said police have seized the man's phone and are in the process of getting a warrant to search the device for any evidence.
"There's a bit of time that's going to pass before we can look at the contents of the phone, and once that's brought forward by investigators, they'll go through it and analyze it, and if there is more victims, then we do our best to contact them," he said.
The victim was not injured in the incident.
Spencer reminds parents to be aware in public places as technology improves.
"It's good to be a little bit vigilant because these types of things do happen from time to time, so especially now that we have a lot of multi-use facilities that have universal change rooms that, you know, this type of thing can happen."
