There are plenty of thrilling cases and new twists in Season 2 of CBC's high-stakes cop drama.
Get ready for a thrilling ride with CBC's high-stakes comic drama, Wild Cards Season 2 coming to CBC and CBC Gem on January 8.
What is Wild Cards about?
Wild Cards is a crime show with a comedic twist that follows the duo of a by-the-book detective Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti), and a spirited, clever con woman Max Mitchell (Vanessa Morgan). They find themselves in an unlikely partnership, each using their unique skills to solve crimes in Vancouver, B.C.
For Ellis, that means hard-boiled shoe leather police work; for Max, it means accents, disguises, schemes and generally befriending everyone in sight, while driving Ellis nuts. "They're each other's yin and yang," says director James Genn in an interview with CBC. "It's just really fun seeing these two go and bust bad guys together because they're going out in the world and doing things with each other that they couldn't ordinarily do on their own."
The show is loosely inspired by the classic 1982 film, 48 Hours, which saw a renegade cop team up with a robber to fight bad guys. Each episode also tips its hat to a different iconic movie or TV show. Take a first look at Episode 1.
Max and Ellis come from very different worlds. Can they ever learn to trust each other fully? And will their sizzling chemistry on screen ignite into something deeper? You'll need to watch to find out.
What's new for Season 2 of Wild Cards?
At the end of Season 1, in a thrilling cliffhanger, Ellis is about to arrest Max for stealing a 33-million-dollar jewel. He's deeply betrayed by her triple-crossing role in the heist when she makes a bombshell revelation: she's learned the identity of his brother's murderer.
When the police commissioner makes an unexpected career announcement, she reassigns Ellis and Max to work together again to help bust a network of high-speed robbers. Both have to learn how to navigate their strained relationship on the job. But Ellis is wary, can he ever trust Max again?
Max assures her con man dad, George (Jason Priestley) that she's still a con woman who hasn't gone over to the dark side…and hints that she's planning something very big.
Max moves into a new place (with Ricky as a roommate, of course), someone from her past comes for a visit and she takes a huge personal risk for Captain Li. Ellis is impressed and their relationship becomes deeper as he moves closer to finding who killed his brother.
While Max deepens her bond with her team and Ellis, she faces a difficult choice: which family feels more like home?
