Two people have been charged with drug trafficking after Regina police seized nearly 12 kilograms of what's believed to be methamphetamine and fentanyl after a traffic stop and search of a home.
On Thursday, the Regina Police Service's drug unit pulled over a vehicle on Highway 1, near Pense, about 25 kilometres west of the city.
Officers found about 6.3 kilograms of what's believed to be fentanyl, four kilograms of a substance believed to be methamphetamine and $1,355 in cash inside the vehicle, police said in a Friday news release.
Two milligrams of pure fentanyl — roughly the size of four grains of salt — can be a lethal dose, according to police(external link).
A 60-year-old man and 50-year-old woman in the vehicle were arrested without incident, Regina police said.
A home on the 2000 block of Argyle Street, in Regina's Cathedral neighbourhood, was also searched the same day, police said.
According to police, officers found:
  • More than 1,500 cartons of contraband cigarettes.
  • Approximately 1.2 kilograms of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
  • About 224 grams of a substance police believe is cocaine.
  • $2,300 in Canadian currency.
  • Five guns and ammunition.
Regina police valued the seizure at about $900,000.
Both people are charged with drug possession with the purpose of trafficking. The 60-year-old is also facing other charges, including possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The two made their first appearance in court on Friday morning.
