Highway 1 between Enterprise, N.W.T., and the Alberta border has reopened with pilot cars escorting drivers after closing due to wildfire smoke, according to an update from the territorial government.
An update at 8:45 Tuesday morning from N.W.T. Infrastructure said the highway was open. Just before 1 p.m., the department further said drivers are being escorted and delays can be expected, along with smoky conditions.
Heavy smoke has been coming from wildfires to the west and south. In a statement Tuesday morning, N.W.T. Fire said there are no wildfire threats to Enterprise or Hay River.
The heavy smoke has created low visibility and difficult driving conditions.
Some rain, forecasted to start this morning in southern parts of the territory, is expected to help mitigate nearby fire growth.
