Alerts issued after hailstorm hit southwestern Winnipeg Thursday afternoon
Tornado warnings issued for rural municipalities in south-central Manitoba Thursday night have now ended.
Environment Canada issued the alerts starting at about 7:50 p.m. for the RM of Morris, including Rosenort and Aubigny, the RM of Montcalm, and the RM of De Salaberry. The municipality of Emerson-Franklin, including Roseau River, was also under an alert.
The final warning ended just before 8:50 p.m.
The national weather service said its meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm that could possibly produce a tornado, in addition to destructive winds, large hail and heavy rain.
It said the storm was located near Dominion City and was moving southeast at 20 km/h. In its final alert, the service said tornadoes were no longer expected with the storm.
People were advised to take immediate shelter if any threatening weather approaches, or if they hear a rumbling noise, see a funnel cloud, or any swirling debris.
Earlier in the day, a severe thunderstorm pelted parts of Winnipeg with hail, strong winds and heavy rain.
Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city at about 4:10 p.m.
Nickel-size hail was reported in several Winnipeg neighbourhoods, including in Charleswood, Westwood, Waverley Heights and Linden Woods.
Thunderstorm warnings were later issued for areas just east and south of Winnipeg. Environment Canada said toonie-sized hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h were possible in the area around New Bothwell and Niverville.
Environment Canada said there is a risk of thunderstorms in the Winnipeg region once again on Friday afternoon.
