A body found at the home is now considered the first homicide of 2024. It is unrelated to the police shooting
Saskatchewan's police watchdog is investigating after an officer shot a man during a search warrant on the west side of Saskatoon early Saturday morning.
The shooting happened after police were called to a home on Lisgar Avenue, between Vanier and Pope crescents around 2:20 a.m., according to a news release from the province's Serious Incident Response Team.
The response unit said it will allow Saskatoon police to handle the investigation of the shooting of the 34-year-old man by one of its officers.
The search warrant was related to an aggravated assault investigation involving firearms.
Two people emerged from the home and were arrested without incident. A third person — later identified as the 34-year-old — also exited the home and got into a confrontation with police, and he was shot by an officer, the police watchdog said.
The man was taken to hospital in stable condition and he's still there.
The response unit said Saskatoon police notified them of the officer discharging his weapon just over an hour later, and a five-person team of investigators was deployed, the release said.
A final report on the investigation into the shooting is expected 90 days after the investigation ends.
Saskatoon's first homicide of 2024
While searching the home on Lisgar Avenue, officers found the body of a man.
Police say the death is not related to their actions on Saturday morning.
A 32-year-old was charged with first-degree murder in relation to the death of the man. It's the city's first homicide of the year, Sasktoon police said Monday in a release.
The identity and age of the man have not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Saskatoon recorded 12 homicides last year. Police laid charges in nine of those incidents.
