Montreal's Drawn and Quarterly wins comics honour

Montreal-based comic book publisher Drawn and Quarterly was among the winners at the annual Joe Shuster Awards in Toronto this weekend.
The prominent Canadian company behind artists such as Chester Brown, Julie Doucet, Joe Sacco and Seth picked up the award for outstanding Canadian comic book and/or graphic novel publisher at an awards ceremony on Saturday evening.
Other winners of the awards, which honour work published in 2007, include:
- Writer — Cecil Castellucci, The P.L.A.I.N. Janes.
- Artist — Dale Eaglesham, Justice Society of America #2-4, 6-7, 9-11.
- Cartoonist (writer/artist) — Jeff Lemire, Essex County Vol. 1: Tales From The Farm; Essex County Vol. 2: Ghost Stories.
- Cover — Steve Skroce, Doc Frankenstein #6.
- Colourist — Dave McCaig, Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. #12; New Avengers #27-35; Fallen Son — The Death of Captain America #1: Wolverine; Marvel Comics Presents #1-4; Wolverine #50; Avengers Classic #7; DC Infinite Halloween Special #1; The Other Side #4-5; Stephen Colbert's Tek Jensen #1.
- Web comics creator/team — Ryan Sohmer and Lar De Souza, Least I Can Do (leasticoulddo.com); Looking for Group (lfgcomic.com).
- Achievement related to comic books — David Watkins, history teacher at Toronto's Weston Collegiate Institute who uses comic books as a teaching tool.
- Retailer — Big B Comics, Hamilton, Ont.
- Favourite Canadian creator, English — Faith Erin Hicks, Zombies Calling.
- Favourite Canadian creator, French — Philippe Girard aka phlppgrrd, Danger Public.
- Favourite international creator — Ed Brubaker, Captain America; Criminal; Immortal Iron Fist; Uncanny X-Men.
Four individuals were also named to the Canadian Comic Book Creator hall of fame:
- Stan Berneche.
- John Byrne.
- Pierre Fournier.
- Edwin R. "Ted" McCall.
Saturday's prize ceremony was the culmination of a daylong gathering that also featured talks related to comics, a discussion of the 70th anniversary of the Superman character and Visions of an Icon, a Superman-themed exhibit featuring work by Canadian artists.
Established in 2004 and first awarded in 2005, the Joe Shuster Awards are named after the Canadian-born co-creator of Superman. The national award honours creators, publishers and purveyors of comic books, graphic novels and web comics.
