The modern Elmwood riding has been around since the 1958 provincial general election. The riding has voted NDP in every general election since 1962 and before that, for the party's predecessor, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.
The riding is bounded on the west and most of the south by the Red River, with the remainder of the southern boundary running along the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Keewatin line. To the east, it's bounded by Raleigh Street. Its northern boundary runs from Rossmere Crescent along Henderson Highway, McLeod Avenue, Roch Street and Anderson Park.
The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Rossmere, East Kildonan, Chalmers, Glenelm and west Elmwood.
Its population is 22,895, says the province's riding profile (compiled from the 2021 census).
The median age of the riding is almost the same as the overall provincial median, at 38 compared to 38.4 provincewide, the riding profile(external link) and the 2021 census(external link) say. The census found the median household income in the area is $70,500.
