Entry in five-ish words
"Migrant worker asks to go home."
The story's source of inspiration
"In 2022, I was in Sydney and I bonded with the front desk staff over a bizarre trend of young Australians trashing hotel rooms. At the time, I was teaching a high school unit on migrant labour and felt in a good place to listen.
"Over a week, the two women told me about their lives, one from Malaysia the other from Vietnam, about family near and far, their goals, struggles, work visas during the pandemic and more. When I returned to Toronto, I couldn't help but see my city in a new way.
"I'm realizing these themes have resonated with me as far back as seeing Lixin Fan's Last Train Home and a video on The Economist about China called The Largest Migration in History."
First lines
Diwa pushed the stroller to the park. She found the other nannies in the usual spot, near the children's playground. She could hear them chatting in Tagalog as she approached. It was the first chilly day of fall.
One of the newer nannies wore a toque for the first time. She was bundled up more than the babies. Oh, it gets much colder than this, the more experienced nannies laughed. Much colder.
