3 people dead after stabbings in Montreal, suspect in custody, police say

Victims and suspect part of same family, sources tell Radio-Canada

Montreal police are investigating after three people were fatally stabbed on Friday, and sources tell Radio-Canada that the victims and suspect are members of the same family.
According to the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), a 911 call was placed at around 9:20 a.m. regarding people in need of assistance inside an apartment building near the corner of Bélanger and Viau streets in the Rosemont neighbourhood.
Officers found the three victims on the property and their deaths were confirmed at the scene, triggering a major police operation. Police have not confirmed the link between the suspect and the victim.
A spokesperson for the SPVM said each of the bodies suffered wounds from a sharp object.
In a video circulating online, police officers are seen subduing a bare-chested suspect, pinning him to the ground. According to Radio-Canada, the suspect needed to be hospitalized.

For much of the day, there were several emergency vehicles on the scene and police set up a security perimeter between Viau and 40th Avenue.
On Twitter, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante offered her condolences to the victims' families. Premier François Legault also offered his condolences and thanked first responders who rushed to the scene.
"It's troubling," Legault said during a public appearance in L'Assomption, located east of Montreal. "We'll be careful before speculating on the reasons but it's troubling."
The SPVM says psychological resources are being provided to the first responders, police officers and 911 operators who need them.
