Hamilton police say a 15-year-old boy was killed in a hit and run Wednesday afternoon at Upper Paradise Road and Stone Church Road West, near Kordun Street.
Police said they responded to a "motor vehicle collision" around 2:50 p.m., later saying "one individual has been transported to hospital in critical condition."
Police said they had information that "a dark blue 2008 Dodge Caliber had struck a 15-year-old pedestrian."
A few hours later, police confirmed the teen was pronounced dead.
Another 15-year-old boy was arrested for "fail to remain cause death" and "dangerous driving causing death," police said.
"A 15-year-old male was driving the Dodge vehicle northbound at a high rate of speed in the middle turn lane on Upper Paradise Road when he struck the 15-year-old male as he attempted to cross over Upper Paradise Road," police said in a release. "The pedestrian became airborne and struck a northbound stopped vehicle."
Residents who witnessed the boy being hit tried to help him until first responders arrived, police said.
Police also confirmed both the driver and the victim were students at nearby St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School.
The school offered condolences on social media Wednesday evening, saying a crisis response team from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board would be available Thursday.
"Our most sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family, who have suffered an unimaginable loss," the school said.
