This is an email interview with Stuart Kirton, who is the founder of VDG Salumi(external link), a cured meats company, where 30 per cent of the employees have disabilities.
Why is it important to hire people with disabilities?
It is important to hire people with disabilities to give opportunities for all of the community. It puts managers to the test regarding their systems and forces them to use adaptive management skills, which I find essential in this day and age of business.

What benefits have you seen by hiring people with disabilities?
Loyalty, like no other. I always say "loyalty for miles," used as sort of a positive notion through word of mouth. I often get to meet many people that are close to the inclusive workers and they are very happy to be a part of what we are doing — they bring friends, who bring friends and families "for miles." Loyalty is also them never being late, never calling in sick and communicating time that requires them to be away.

Hiring inclusive has brought nothing but positivity to our business, inside and out. We have significantly increased our community engagement, and it has become a core value for us and our culture.
What does inclusion look like among your workforce?
Inclusion looks like the base template of relationship building, social awareness and importance at all levels — making each job just as important as the other. People are working calmly, are careful with their words and polite and helpful.

What is required as an employer to accommodate hiring people with disabilities?
As an employer, you must use adaptive management techniques, altering the bar based on individuals capacities.
