Emergency room closures. Family doctor shortages. Wait times with devastating consequences. Staffing issues and unhealthy work environments. British Columbia is in a health-care crisis, and the province's rural communities are suffering the most.
On September 20, CBC Vancouver's Anita Bathe(external link) and Belle Puri hosted Situation Critical: a free, online public town hall about access to doctors, what's not working and what needs to change. You can watch it now on YouTube(external link) or listen on CBC Listen(external link).
Panellists:
  • Adrian Dix, minister of health, B.C.
  • Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh, president of Doctors of B.C.
  • Dr. Rita McCracken, family physician and UBC assistant professor and primary care researcher
And tune in all week to CBC Radio One, CBC TV and cbc.ca/bc(external link) for a continuation of the conversation with health-care professionals about the current state of health care in the province.
This town hall is part of Situation Critical(external link), a series from CBC British Columbia reporting on the barriers people in this province face in accessing timely and appropriate health care.
