GF: Lost decade. After 10 years in prison, a Saudi blogger has been freed -- and one of his longtime lawyers tells us Raif Badawi's release is proof that even Saudi Arabia can be swayed by public opinion.

Part 1: Raif Badawi Freed, Sackler Testimony, Former Finnish PM

Guest: Pascal Paradis

CH: It was the announcement that friends and supporters of Raif Badawi have been waiting for. Today, his wife Ensaf Haidar tweeted, "After 10 years in prison, Raif is free!" The Saudi blogger was imprisoned and sentenced to lashes after being accused of criticizing religious figures and promoting liberal views of Islam. Pascal Paradis is the executive director at Lawyers without Borders - and has been working on Mr. Badawi's case for eight years. We reached him in Quebec City.

GF: Mr. Paradis, tell me about getting the news today that Raif Badawi is, in fact, now free.

PASCAL PARADIS: I was so happy, so… so relieved that finally he has been released. A bit stunned because we feared that even though he was coming to the end of his jail term, the authorities could find a way to keep him in jail.

GF: Can you talk a little bit about how difficult this sentence would have been for him psychologically, physically? Ten years is an awfully long time.

PP: It's… it's a long time for a person, once again, who is not the criminal. He was just a citizen who tried to open a dialogue on human rights issues in his country, and he was sentenced to 10 years. We did have some news through his wife, including to his wife, Ensaf Haidar, and stuff like that, and he was physically very difficult. He had a lot of health problems during his… his term in jail, and it was also psychologically very difficult for him. At some point, there were hopes that he could be freed before the end of his term. But it never happened. So it was, yeah, it was a very tough 10 years.

GF: And as… as we said, he was publicly lashed in addition to all of that, wasn't it?

PP: It's part of the… of the sentence. He was fined. He was jailed. And then, he was… he was to be lashed. So there was one public lashing quote/unquote exhibition. So he was… he was publicly lashed. And after that, the regime announced that they would stop the lashing. They said it's for health reasons, and we believe there were indeed health reasons, a health condition on the part of Mr. Badawi. But also, once again, we believe that the international outcry, the international outrage about the lashing, did play a role also to… to… to make sure that this part of the sentence was not applied after the public, the first public lashing.

GF: And for what? Can you remind us what his alleged crime was?

PP: He was originally condemned because he set up a website and he opened a Facebook page where he had some personal reflections on equality between men and women and the necessity for his country to make an evolution in this respect. And some third parties, also some other citizens, did comment on his… on his on his Facebook page. Those were not outrageous comments. They were fair, reasoned comments about equality between men and women. But then, he was… he was accused of committing a crime under Saudi law on cybercrime and cyber terrorism. He was accused of defamation with respect to Saudi authorities, religious authorities, state authorities and fomenting… fomenting trouble in the country. He… he was tried. There was a… there was a… there was a court case. But the hearings violated most of Saudi standards, including on evidence. The evidence that was presented was absolutely not conforming to Saudi law. But he was condemned for that. For… for just trying to open a dialogue on very important human rights issues in these countries.

GF: And he's not been the only victim here. His family is in Quebec; as we know, he has children here. What do you think this means for them?

PP: Think about this, they've been 10 years without seeing their father, worrying about their father being safe, having health problems in jail. So for them, it must be such a day. And I'm so… I'm so happy for them. His wife, Ensaf Haidar, has… has fought for 10 years, has travelled throughout Canada, throughout the world to advocate for human rights, for her spouse's right to be freed, and this was a long road for them. And unfortunately, it's not over yet because is he still subject of a travel ban. So officially, it's… it's part of what he was condemned to. And so, it's the same hurdles. It's the same challenges that we did face when we tried to intervene in the case. This is an arbitrary regime. It has to be remembered that his… his own lawyer, who is a human rights defender in Saudi Arabia, was jailed. So the lawyer in the case was jailed. And then, after that, his sister, Samar Badawi, took on the case. She's not a lawyer, but she was a very vocal defender of her brother, and then she was jailed, too. So he was basically left defenceless in the country. And it's still very hard for him to get official legal assistance in his country. So it's difficult. So the international community is trying to reach out to the Saudi… to the Saudi authorities, and they… they will not accept to… to have this dialogue. And he's defenceless and without legal representation in this country. So that's… that's a tough… that's a… that's a challenging situation still.

GF: So the battle continues?

PP: The battle continues. And I think civil society here in Canada can continue to… to… to advocate for this, to participate in demonstrations, to write, to reach out to the Saudi authorities and to make sure that Mr. Badawi can come to Canada. And once again, this is one case at the international level where Canada can play a specific role because Mr. Badawi family is here in our very country. And… and personally, I would be so honoured and so pleased that such a hero as Mr. Badawi comes to Canada and joins his family here. It would be… that would be, you know, the end result we are looking for.

Sackler Testimony

Guest: Kara Trainor

CH: Their lives were shattered by OxyContin. And yesterday, they got to describe their pain and loss to members of the Sackler family, who owned the company that made it. In a three-hour virtual hearing, three former owners of Purdue Pharma listened in silence as people confronted them about loved ones they'd lost to the opioid crisis. It was part of a bankruptcy hearing for the company -- which could lead to a settlement of billions of dollars that would go to treatment and prevention programs. Individual victims will be allowed to claim compensation as well. Kara Trainor was addicted to opioids, and her son suffered withdrawal symptoms at birth. We reached her in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

GF: Kara, it has been a long time coming, but how did it feel to finally look into that camera yesterday and speak directly to members of the Sackler family?

KARA TRAINOR: It was surreal. For the past 20 years since my addiction started, this has been… I have struggled for so long. And then with my son being born with NAS and stuff like that, it has been… this has been a very, very difficult life. And with having, you know, opiate use disorder and now my son and then to have that moment where I had the opportunity to address them and to be finally heard. I know for myself, I felt voiceless a lot in the past, and it was just amazing to be able to say this is what happened to me and to my son due to your product.

GF: What did you say? Do you remember the words you used?

KT: I don't know [chuckle]. Pretty much I… it was hard because I was somewhat distraught because the person speaking before me, it was so powerful that I was moved to tears. Like, I was… I started crying. I broke down. And then, after that, it was like immediately I had to… I had to talk. And so for me, you know, I pretty much just laid it out what it's been like. You know, I was prescribed it at 21 for, you know, a back injury. And from there, it went to opioid use disorder. And then I was… my pathway to recovery was medication-assisted treatment, methadone. And I was on it for 14 years. And during that time, I got pregnant. You know, I did like the whole our story. And then, I kind of talked about what my son's like now at 11. And, you know, he's got… he's diagnosed with autism. But he also has, like, eye conditions that's directly caused by his NAS. And he does… he struggles with behavioural problems now.

GF: And… and do you attribute that to the… the opioid addiction?

KT: You know what? It's… it's hard to tell because there hasn't been a lot of studies with children that are born, you know, in withdrawal and have NAS.

GF: Mmm-hmm.

KT There haven't been studies that have actually tracked these children.

GF: How do you blame the Sacklers for what happened to you?

KT: Because they had the knowledge of what this product could do? That was their product, and they marketed it massively to the… the American people, actually globally as well. Knowing the risks, things like addiction, they knew. And it became more of a game of money as opposed to public health.

GF: As you spoke yesterday, could you see them on… on the call?

KT: Yes.

GF: And what was their reaction?

KT: They were watching just passively.

GF: Did they say anything?

KT: They did not.

GF Were you expecting --

KT: There wasn't any emotion.

GF: Did that surprise you?

KT: No.

GF: Why not?

KT: I went into this with no expectations. In the past, there's been comments by Dr. Richard Sackler about the people that took his product and became addicted.

GF: I guess what I'm wondering is, have you had a sense from the family of any sense of responsibility or regret? Anything that's been expressed to you that way?

KT: I have not.

GF: The hearing yesterday was… was part of a bankruptcy action. It was a brokered deal that protects the family from lawsuits. The company will pay out billions of dollars over the next years for this. Do you think that's punishment enough?

KT: I think that the people that suffered, I don't know if there's any amount of money that can… can help? There are people that really would like them criminally charged, and I totally, totally get it.

GF: Would you like that? Is that what you think justice would be?

KT: In my own personal life, I know that for myself and for my own recovery, I had to let go. I had to let go of the vengeance that I once had. I hated that family, I hated Purdue, I hated what they did to me, to my son, and I was an angry, angry, angry person for a very long time. And if you would have asked me, probably about three or four years ago, do you want them to, you know, rot in a cell? I would have said absolutely. Today, I'm more focussed on a good outcome for the settlement. That's my own… my only, you know, focus. Because I think that money with the state abatement programs and the money that's going to the victims is going to be put to good use. And so, you know, I don't really get caught up. But that said, I totally, totally feel where the families are coming from, you know? So, I would like to say I'm somewhat split. Part of me is like, yes, you know, if that… if that happens, you know, that's something that… that is going to happen. And if not, at least we have the settlement money so that we can go and we can create, you know, better outcomes for people.

GF: Was this an important thing that happened yesterday? The fact that families could actually speak directly to the Sacklers?

KT: Oh, I think… I think it was amazing. I think that's going to help a lot of people in their healing process to know that they were heard. That their… their son or their daughter, that their names were spoken out loud to the family. And that… that the Sacklers had to sit there and listen to the grief in the mums and dad's voices.

GF: Yeah.

KT: You know? And I think that it was… it was just a great way for people to finally maybe get some closure.

CH: Kara Trainor testified at a bankruptcy hearing this week in front of three former owners of Purdue Pharma, maker of the drug OxyContin.

Former Finnish PM

Guest: Alexander Stubb

CH: Alexander Stubb warns we may still be underestimating Vladimir Putin. Mr. Stubb is the former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Finland. And he knows a thing or two about the Russian president. As foreign minister, he helped negotiate the fragile peace that ended the first of Mr. Putin's foreign wars -- back when he invaded Georgia. More recently, Mr. Stubb served as an advisor to Russia's current prime minister, as they met with the Russian president in an effort to stave off the cataclysm now underway. We reached Alexander Stubb in Florence, Italy.

GF: Mr. Stubb, you've written recently about Vladimir Putin that, quote, we must now assume that his actions have no limits. What do you mean by that?

ALEXANDER STUBB: Well, I mean, to say that you know, he's being very rational from a Russian perspective. He's a typical Russian leader. He has a whole bunch of princes under him. And right now, he has a stated vision of a historic Russia from the 1800s, which means one language, one religion and one leader. And he's also said that he wants to take over Ukraine. He wants to push back the frontiers of NATO in Eastern and central Europe, and he wants to prevent Finnish and Swedish NATO membership. And obviously, he doesn't hold back. So I don't know where this is going to go, but we're going to have to understand that, you know, he's not going to stop softly, at least.

GF: You have dealt with him for… for many years in a number of different capacities. What conclusions have you come to about not only his motivations but where his limits are?

AS: Well, you know, I've been in the room, so to speak, with him four times, and, you know, what we have to understand is that Putin is basically establishing his legacy at the moment. So he sees himself as, you know, Stalin or Ivan the Terrible or Peter the Great. He wants to go down in history, and sorry for the term, for making Russia great again. He saw the 1990s and the collapse of the Soviet Union as a big humiliation. So, he'll do everything in his power to make his legacy look good from a Russian perspective.

GF: Did you understand that earlier on when you were dealing with him? Or have you only come to appreciate that now since the invasion of Ukraine?

AS: It depends, I guess, on how you define that. I mean, I was involved as foreign minister in mediating peace in Georgia in 2008. And then, I watched as prime minister, the annexation of Crimea. So I thought that he was in the process of creating two frozen conflicts, one in Donetsk and the other one in Luhansk, and he would stop at that. So I, much like all other pundits or one of the pundits, got it wrong. And this is the reality that we have to live with at the moment.

GF: Why did you get it wrong, do you think?

AS: Well, you know, I'm not one for sort of wisdom or hindsight, but I guess retrospectively, I should have seen that he was building his legacy. And his Munich speech in 2007 was just the beginning. All of the different visions of history that he's written, they were true. But you know, when you have 1,300 kilometres of border with Russia, you have to try to get along with its leader. That's part of your existence.

GF: You have now said as well that Mr. Putin can no longer be appeased. And if that's true, how should Western leaders be dealing with him going forward?

AS: Putin needs to understand that the West is not going to give up, and, of course, the means and the ways of doing it for us right now is, on one hand, providing arms to Ukraine and President Zelensky. And on the other hand, to go for this onslaught of sanctions. This is the only hard talk that he understands. And to be honest, I think it's working a little bit better [chuckling] than Putin ever expected. Basically, in one week, he achieved everything he didn't want to. He's seeing the Europeanisation of Ukraine, the unification of Europe, the rejuvenation of NATO, the rejuvenation of the transatlantic partnership. And at the end of the day, perhaps, perhaps a reversal of NATO in Finland and Sweden. In other words, us perhaps eventually joining.

GF: I understand public opinion is starting to shift, I guess for obvious reasons in Finland. What do you think is going to happen?

AS: Well, not even starting to shift, it's basically a 180 degree U-turn in many ways. So, we used to have about 50 per cent, roughly speaking against membership and 20 in favour. And now, it's 50 in favour and 20 against. And I think the longer the war goes on, the more the opinion polls are going to go up for the… for the favourable side.

GF: Going back to Mr. Putin for a second, you have said that this is a man who knows no limits, but you've also just said that you think that he is starting to realize that perhaps he has miscalculated in Ukraine. Does that make him more dangerous? Or do you think that there is a way that this could actually end in a peaceful way?

AS: Well, I guess the first observation to make there is to say that, you know, the most peaceful from his perspective would have been that he would have just marched into Kyiv within 24 hours, but he didn't succeed with that. And he has to, you know, go back to the drawing board and wonder, okay, what's going to happen next? I'm not a military expert, but from what I hear and I see, it's not exactly like the Russian military doing a good job at this particular moment, so he's probably trying to recalculate his strategy. But I guess anyone feels a little bit uncomfortable being cornered. And, of course, what's happening at the moment is that Russia is going to be utterly and completely isolated. I mean, a little bit like North Korea or even, you know, South Africa during apartheid.

GF: Well, you have written, and you're not the only one who's said that the only way that this situation can be normalized now is with regime change. Can you envision that happening?

AS: Yeah, eventually, I mean, Putin is 69 years old. But we just don't know when? You know, is it going to be next week? Well, probably not next month, probably not in a year or 10 years. And that's the time scale here. So we don't know. And we should also remember that the last time we had a bit of a coup or revolution in the Soviet Union or Russia was in 1991 in August, and the people who replaced Gorbachev, who was the great reformer, right? They were the hardcore junta before they went ousted after a few days or weeks by… by Yeltsin. So, you know, we don't know what follows. Is it going to be a worse prince or a softer prince? So regime change is, I think, the only way out of this. But that regime change has to happen from inside, not the outside.

GF: Mr. Stubb, thank you for your time today.

AS: My pleasure.

Tin Man’s Oil Can

CH: It's a beautiful country, no question. Very colourful. But you have to admit that Oz seems wildly unstable. You've got wicked witches pretty much running the East and West. Then there's Glinda the Good Witch, who's all-powerful, but doesn't do anything about the rampaging flying monkeys. And then there are the three menacing dudes in the Lollipop Guild -- whose only job seems to be giving visitors giant lollipops. It’s… it’s not clear where they stand exactly. So if you live in that confusing environment, and you manage to build a tin man who is autonomous, and can chop wood and sing and dance, you can be forgiven for forgetting to include a heart. There's a lot going on! However, there's no excuse for letting him rust.

And now, one of those rare items is going up for auction. It's the one presented to actor Jack Haley -- who played the Tin Man -- after the shoot was over. And it’s hard to tell how much he appreciated that, because apparently he hated having a bunch of stuff glued to his face, and he also didn't like the severe eye infection the silver makeup gave him. Bidding for the oil can will start at $50,000 U.S. -- but it's expected to go for $200,000. And if you win that item that was so important to the Tin Man, don't just lock it away somewhere. Let people see it. I mean, come on: have a heart.

Part 2: Russian Tech Exodus, Texas Trans Investigations

Russian Tech Exodus

Guest: Ilya Krasilshchik

CH: Tech entrepreneurs are fleeing Russia. Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, and his crackdown on the free flow of information, have led to stories of a brain drain featuring chartered jets and last-minute rentals in Dubai. Ilya Krasilshchik is the CEO of the Russian grocery delivery startup Yandex. He was in Moscow until 10 days ago. Then he packed his bags and headed for the airport. We reached Mr. Krasilshchik tonight in Tbilisi, Georgia.

GF: Ilya, tell me about that moment as you boarded the plane to leave Russia?

ILYA KRASILSHCHIK: You know, I think I'm not sure that I'm still… you understand what happened, and I still feel what's happening. My… my kids… So, I'm in Tbilisi. And my kids, they had a plane an hour after me in the same airport. And right now, they're in Israel, and we just said goodbye to everybody just near the gate. And you know, I think that this is a situation where you need to cry. But I still can't cry, [chuckling] and I want to do it, but I still can't. I don't know why?

GF: What convinced you in the end that you had to go?

IK: You know, the day before the war started, I asked my followers on Instagram, and I asked them, what should happen for you to leave this country with a one-way ticket? So we know we live… we live in Russia. We saw a lot of awful things, but nobody in my circle believed that this could happen. So, the day after we walk in, we see that we are in the war right now with our friends. We have a lot of friends in Ukrainian cities. And you understand that, yes, your world has changed. And no, not the same day we understood that we needed to leave. But surely this is the moment you start to think, do you want to be in the country? Do you want to work, do you want to pay taxes in this country? Then you go to the streets, and you see some people who shouted no to war. And you see, as always, a lot of policemen. And you know that a lot of your friends are arrested. And you know actually how your government reacts. And you know that if the war started, the situation will be worse day after day after day after day. And we have been afraid of the closed borders since we were born. So the situation when you are in this country, in that country, and you can't leave it.

GF: Mm-Hmm.

IK: No… no… no… nobody wants to be in this situation.

GF: You are now in Georgia, and you are hearing and seeing, and you have an understanding of what's going on in Ukraine and what's happening with the war. But many Russians don't, right?

IK: Many Russians, I don't know why, but still, yeah, they don't. They don't, yeah.

GF: And what do you think they… what do they think of the war?

IK: First of all, there are people who read the independent sources. I think there are millions of such people still in Russia, maybe dozens of millions. I don't know? And they are openly against what's happening. They're afraid, but they're openly against it. Second, are people who really believe that this is something like a special operation against the Nazification of Ukraine.

GF: This is… this is the government propaganda. This is what the… the government news services are telling them?

IK: Yeah, this is the propaganda. People… there's a small amount of younger people like this, and there are a lot of people who are older, like 55-plus or something like that, 50-plus who read or watch the news on the Russian TV. And they watched this news not since yesterday, but for many, many, many, many, many years. And yes, they believe in this. I don't know how, but they believe. And actually, there is this third part of the audience, of the citizens, and actually these people have no opinion. And I think this is the main part of Russia. And they… they are very passive.

GF: Do you think they will continue to be passive? Or do you think that things are going to fundamentally change in Russia because of this war?

IK: I don't know? I don't know? For example, let's take, I don't know, Venezuela. Venezuela is a country where the government just destroyed the economy. And the sanctions destroyed this economy. The people really just try to survive in such situations. They literally don't have anything to eat. But still, Maduro is in power. Yeah, we have an example of Belarus. They are under strict sanctions, a lot like Russia right now. But still, they had a huge protest. Millions of people came on the street. And still, the situation in Belarus right now is much, much, much, much worse than three years ago. And Lukashenko is still in power, so we can't be sure that it will help.

GF: You are in Georgia now. You say your family flew to Israel. You're separated. Nobody knows at this point how long this war will continue. Where do you look for hope?

IK: Where do I look for hope? First of all, the main hope is people. The main, as I think is in any other country, the best thing is people. And I hope that I know… I know Russians. I know… I know how many great things they can do. And they can do awful things. But… but they're still very peaceful people who can do a lot of great things. And I hope that my generation will do anything inside Russia or outside Russia. This is my first hope. Second hope is about.. it's hard to talk about it. It hurts to talk about it openly. But still, I hope that, and actually, I'm sure that a lot of people in the elite and in government, they understand that the situation is crazy. They understand it. And there were a lot of signals from them before the war that surely there will be no war. But what we're talking about, and I'm sure that they're in shock as we are.

GF: Right.

IK: And maybe the subject will change there. But… but I'm not sure. I'm not sure.

GF: Do you think you will see your homeland again?

IK: I hope. I want to. I want to. I think, yes, because I'm young. I'm 34, and he is 70 or something like that.

GF: Mm-hmm.

IK: So I want to live a long life. I don't know how to say it in English, but to see… [chuckle] to see the next president. [laughing]

GF: Mm-hmm.

IK: Maybe it will be better. Yes. So yes, this is the main hope that I am young. Yes, this is the hope.

Dinner With Putin

CH: There's a fun game where you draw up your ideal list of dinner guests. It usually consists of famous or historical figures: Socrates, Cleopatra, Jane Austen, Batman. Not sure whether Maya Asha ever played that game. But if she did, she probably wouldn't have put Russian President Vladimir Putin on her list. Nevertheless: there she was, at dinner with him. Ms. Asha is an expert on Byzantine Christian art. Three years ago, when she was a student, she was invited to a black-tie dinner in Moscow by some Russian friends to dine with the president and talk about art. She recently wrote about the experience in Artnet. And she says the conversation she had with Mr. Putin makes her worry what will happen to art and culture in Ukraine.

MAYA ASHA: No, I don't regret going. I think that everything sort of happens for a reason. And I think I gleaned some insights that are hopefully helpful to the artistic community, the art world that I am part of. Because that's essentially what I put into the op-ed that I don't think people quite understand how passionate he is about these objects. And the fact that he views Ukraine as ostensibly part of Russia means he will move them back to the nexus of power, which we've seen him do after Crimea, where he moved over a million artifacts. So I don't regret it because I think it gave me information that is valuable to my sort of area. The people that I work with and hopefully people who care about cultural heritage, like the Smithsonian Institute, is doing really great work right now to try and track what's being moved.

MARCY MARKUSA: Just last, what lessons should the world take on Russia's what you described about Russia's movement of cultural artifacts, how you've described that?

MA: I think the world should take note of what Hitler did in terms of solely in terms of moving art. He moved it strategically, he moved it quietly, and we still don't have all of it back. The restitution is still about five million objects missing. And part of the reason of that is greed. But part of it is how you annihilate a culture is you strip it of all of its accoutrement, for lack of a better word. He did this in Poland, which was incredibly effective. And Putin's army has, the Russians have already, burned down the Ivankiv Museum in Ukraine, which was totally devoted to celebrating Ukrainian identity. So I think he's going to take things that speak to the Russian history and imperial Russia and destroy things that are distinctly Ukrainian. And people have to understand that that is part of culture and part of a sense of identity. And if you erase that, then it's like the people never existed.

CH: That was art history expert and former Winnipegger Maya Asha speaking with Marcy Markusa, host of Winnipeg's Information Radio, about dining with Vladimir Putin.

Texas Trans Investigations

Guest: Ande

CH: Parents in Texas are grappling with the very real fear that they could lose their trans children. Last month, state governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. It ordered the agency to investigate cases of "child abuse", if a child is receiving gender-affirming medical care like puberty blockers. The letter is not legally binding, but the agency says there are at least nine open investigations. And while there have been some successful court challenges to stop the investigations, some families are scrambling to figure out what to do -- and where to go? Ande's 15-year-old child, B, is trans. We are withholding Ande's last name because she fears she could have her child taken away under this order.

GF: Ande, what have these last few weeks been like for you and your family as you weigh what to do?

ANDE: It's been very akin to the idea of putting a frog into a pot of cold water and then bringing the temperature up, and the frog suddenly, it doesn't realize it's in danger until that very last moment when it's too late to do anything about it. This has always felt like a safe place. The area where we live has a fantastic LGBTQ community. And so we've always felt very safe and surrounded by people who understand what we're going through and who understand how scary it can be and how new it can be. And every little thing that happened didn't seem that scary or to be an insurmountable issue until this. And all of a sudden, we're a frog in a boiling pot of water and no way to escape.

GF: So what have you decided to do?

A: My child is going to go live with their father in a safer state -- their biological father. It's the best option that we have, considering the issues that are happening here in Texas. And in addition to the daily fear of having someone come and tell you that they're taking your child and there's really nothing you can do to stop it, there's also the concern of what growing up in an environment where a child sees important people, the political people, the people in positions of power, actively trying to reduce or erase their existence, telling them that they're not a worthwhile, worthy or normal human being. The effect that that would have on a teenager is taken too lightly and not something I'm willing to put my child through.

GF: Now, of course, this started with the letter from… from the governor ordering agencies to investigate gender-affirming medical care as child abuse. What do you understand they want to investigate? And how… how are they defining abuse?

A: So what they're actually referring to specifically is Chapter 261 of the Texas Family Code, which mostly talks about abuse by neglect, it talks about physical abuse, and it outlines who is a mandated reporter. However, the words that are spoken and the rhetoric leans more towards permanent medical solutions or body changes to a child. That's kind of what they're leaning on; that's their crutch.

GF: And this… this would include all kinds of… of medical procedures, many of them short of genital surgery, right?

A: Absolutely. And what's important to remember is that there are additional procedures that any other person might need as a child that would be life-altering. So this is kind of an unfair broad stroke that masking the real issue that there seems to be about specifically trans children or trans-Texans. This is kind of the mask for it.

GF: If you… if you don't mind, can you tell me the conversations that you've had with your child about what they need to do in order to… to be safe?

A: This past week, actually, we sat down and had a conversation about we never want you to hide yourself. We never want you to be inauthentic, but now is not the time to be a beacon. Until things are figured out, let the bigger people be the beacon. And let's let them address this issue. Now's not the time to wear your pride shirts or your transgender flag necklace or be as active in that part of the youth community as you have been previously. Now's the time to live your life and not draw attention to it. Pass this information to your friends. This is all in your best interests, and we're working actively to get you to a safe place.

GF: How difficult a conversation was that?

A: Thinking about not having my child that's lived with me their entire life at home every night and not knowing what's going on with them and being able to have that face-to-face conversation and just feel their presence next to me is unfathomable.

GF: And what has B's reaction been?

A: Understanding, fear, but there's also a little bit of excitement there. I mean, because things have been progressing over time, even though we've been relatively safe, it's always been a little scary. There's always been prejudice. They've always been someone who actively or expressly opposes B's existence. And so the place that they will be moving to is far more progressive and liberal. So there's a little bit of excitement. It's also an opportunity to develop an additional relationship with B's biological father. And in addition to that, to kind of get back on track.

GF: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And… and that's easy to understand in theory, I think, but that doesn't account for the fact that you will be sending your child away. You will be living without your child now because of this.

A: Yes. And --

GF: How are you dealing with that?

A: I'm not. [laughing] I also have an older son, who'll be staying here because it's high school, and he wants to be able to finish. It is literally splitting up our family. And that… that is something I'm definitely talking to a therapist about right now.

GF: Hmm. There are some legal challenges to this order. It is… it is only an order. It is not yet a law. If these investigations were blocked by a judge, would that change anything for you?

A: No. There would still not be a sense of relief, and there would still not be a sense of safety because that's just the first time. Someone's always going to feel this way, and sort of a kindling has been lit here. The reality of it is that my child is spending time in an area where people talk every day about whether they should be allowed to exist. That's not an environment for a child. Imagine, I mean, just think of how much hormones and activity and emotions you had when you were a teenager. And now, people are debating whether you should be able to be you. That's not appropriate, and it's… it's not the right environment. So this would still be the best choice for us.

GF: Ande, I appreciate you talking to us about it. These are important conversations to have. Thank you.

A: Absolutely. Thank you.

NFLD Surgery Delays

CH: The association representing the doctors of Newfoundland and Labrador says delayed surgeries aren't just taking a toll on patients -- they're affecting physicians too. At a press conference today, Association president Dr. Susan MacDonald said the situation has reached a crisis point. And she called on the province to do whatever it takes to eliminate its surgery backlog. Dr. MacDonald said two St. John's hospitals alone are reporting more than 6,000 stalled cases -- and delays are a problem from Corner Brook to Carbonear. Increasingly, a life-threatening problem.

DR. SUSAN MACDONALD: We have a small population of just over 500,000 people in this province. Six thousand patients is a pretty big percentage, and each one of those people is somebody who lies awake at night wondering what tomorrow's going to bring? Because they're suffering with whatever it is that they need their surgery for. Whether it's cancer, whether it's a… it's a hip that doesn't work anymore. The burden of suffering on those patients, on their families, on those who love them, on their workplaces that they can't return to and then the burden of suffering on my surgical colleagues, both physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, everybody involved in the care of those patients is huge. So whether we use the term crisis or not, this is a very important issue. Those people deserve to have their surgical treatment in a timely fashion. I'm already seeing patients in my specialty of palliative care who have been delayed with their surgery and are no longer curable, and are now facing the mortality that comes from that. And that's hard on me too. So I'd like you to keep that in mind that every one of those 6,000 is a person.

Part 3: Egypt Food Shortages, Longest Car Restored

WPG Woman Cares For Ukrainian Mother

CH: The long lead-up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine was ominous. But even in the days just before Vladimir Putin launched his attack, there was hope that the aggressive rhetoric, and the troop buildup on the border, was all for show. So a lot of people went on living their lives in a state of cautious optimism. That was the case for Daniel Raiskin -- who lives in Winnipeg, where he's the music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra -- and his family. Mr. Raiskin's wife had travelled to Kharkiv to take care of her mother-- who was undergoing chemotherapy. And days after her arrival, the invasion began.

SOUNDCLIP

DANIEL RAISKIN: It happened in the early morning. We all woke up to that. And I was away from home. I was in Bratislava, where I'm actually now. I woke up to see on all the channels, and from all my friends, the messages, and we know what's happening. And I immediately called her, and you actually… you know, I can't describe the feeling of talking to your loved one and hearing the sounds of rockets and artillery bombardment explosions on the other side of the phone conversation. It's a shock, it's disbelief, but it's also instinctively you immediately realize that you need to take some action. But what kind of action can you take if you have an elderly person on your hands that is just receiving three doses of chemotherapy? And it's really hard to understand what the next step is. But shortly after that, we realized that they really need to get out of there as soon as possible. And well, the rest has been unfolding.

FAITH FUNDAL: What did your wife and mother-in-law do to stay safe?

DR: You know, the idea that everyone knew immediately what to do and that there were the bomb shelters and then everyone knew where to go. And I know that the first thing my wife did the day the war started, she went to buy some groceries because that's the very first thing on your mind that you stock up on some food and water, and you know, the things that are first necessities. And she called me from standing in line to an otherwise very easily accessible grocery supermarket. To get there, she was standing for two and a half hours in line, listening to the blasts of artillery. And when she got there, there were a lot of people, a lot of anxiety. She managed to get what she could carry with her, and she returned. And well, there's really not much you could do initially. And then, a few days later, they were already embarking on the train, you know, quickly making this decision, what to take, what not to take. They had to leave their… their apartment there, take necessary documents, leave the stuff they don't necessarily need for this trip and leaving, you know, a complete life behind. I'm speaking about my… my mother-in-law. And obviously, my wife grew up in that apartment before she left as a 20-year-old to U.S. 30-some years ago.

Egypt Food Shortages

Guest: Khaled Dawoud

CH: Ukraine is enduring a catastrophe right now. And that catastrophe is rippling around the world. Since Russia invaded, costs of goods have been increasing everywhere. That's threatening food security in regions that rely heavily on imports from Ukraine and Russia. In Egypt, authorities are struggling to come up with contingency plans. It's the world's largest importer of wheat -- which mainly comes from Russia and Ukraine. Khaled Dawoud is the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the English newspaper, Al Ahram Weekly. We reached him in Cairo, Egypt.

GF: Mr. Dawoud, what has been the impact so far on the cost of bread and other goods in Egypt?

KHALED DAWOUD: Well, the factor has been quite immediate. To be honest, I would just like attending the Friday prayer in one of the Cairo mosques today, and the preacher was basically calling upon the merchants to stop increasing prices of basic commodities, including bread itself. Because as many of your listeners would know, Egypt is the number one importer of wheat, particularly from Russia and Ukraine. So everybody's expecting the worst. We import in Egypt more wheat from Russia than from Ukraine. But of course, with the war situation in Russia and sanctions that are being imposed, even the transfer of Russian wheat is not going to be easy. So, unfortunately, since this war started, there have been very pessimistic expectations in terms of food prices, but in terms of inflation in general. Egypt is a country with 30 per cent of the population living at the poverty line, which is like 30 million people, and you have six per cent living under the poverty line. People making like, you know, almost like 50 dollars a month. So these guys, they depend on… these segments of the population, they depend heavily on bread as their basic diet.

GF: Right. And how much have prices gone up already?

KD: I mean, strangely enough, today, just like this mosque was in a market area and at least 30 to 40 per cent for the loaf of bread. Although officially, you know, nothing has been announced that Egypt, for ages, for like decades, has been subsidizing bread. But with Mr. Sisi, president of Egypt, taking more of a liberal attitude towards the economy, the government has been reducing the subsidy on a regular basis. And just before the Ukrainian war, there were like the president himself saying that the price of a loaf of bread cannot be as cheap as it is right now. So probably with the crisis in Russia and Ukraine, there is a very good justification for the government to increase the prices of bread, blaming it on the Russian and Ukrainian war, not because of its economic policy. But again, bread is a very, very sensitive matter. We have a history in that respect. In 1977, when late President Sadat decided to increase the price of bread and reduce the subsidy, basically the country went into riots. And probably that's why the issue of bread and wheat is a very sensitive matter in Egypt, considering we're not a rice population like parts of Asia. We're a bread population.

GF: Have the imports stopped completely as far as you know?

KD: I'm not sure that the imports had stopped, particularly from Russia, definitely from Ukraine. They have stopped because, you know, the Ukraine ports have been bombed, and it's impossible to get anything out of Ukraine. But also, Egypt, like countries that import wheat, we have some reserves. So like, maybe enough for three months. That's what the government has usually done. They buy, like, three months, four months' reserve. So it probably will crunch even stronger when basically those three or four months are over. And during that again, you know, the Egyptian economy has already, like, hardly been recovering from the COVID-19 effects, and we had to borrow money from the IMF and other, you know, international parties. So right now, it's definitely going to bite further with all of the other factors I mentioned, like the oil price, the tourism revenue, all those kinds of factors together.

GF: What about alternatives? Does Egypt have other places that it could import wheat from?

KD: Probably. But it's expensive. You know, I mean, the United States is there, but the U.S. wheat is very expensive. There's Brazilian wheat, Romanian wheat.

GF: Canadian wheat! [chuckling]

KD: Canadian wheat, of course. But like, you know, the issue here is it becomes more expensive because Canada is very far, America is very far from Egypt. Russia's closer, you know? Ukraine is closer, of course. They offer better prices, cheaper prices. And that's the key problem. Even in Egypt, basically, after the Ukraine war started, they made two bids to buy wheat, but they had to cancel these two bids, basically, because the prices offered were too high. So the only hope we have here in Egypt is that this war ends soon so that now not only the Egyptian economy, I guess the world economy can kind of, you know, settle a little bit because there is a lot of unsettlement, especially for a country like Egypt, which has a very high foreign debt. I don't think that the government right now can afford borrowing more and more from the IMF. After the COVID-19, we borrowed like five billion dollars from the IMF, and we already borrowed $12 billion before. So it's like… it is definitely a very tough time for the Egyptian government and for the Egyptian people, as well as other peoples in our region who depend on wheat.

GF: I was going to ask you because it's not just Egypt that relies on Ukraine and Russian wheat, is it?

KD: Sure, sure, sure. It's like, Morocco, Algeria, I mean, many Arab countries. We are not, like, producing enough wheat for the people, and the tendency at one point the government was like import wheat and then plant other products that you can export and bring you more money so that you can import wheat. But many people right now are questioning this kind of policy and how much dependence you can have on imported wheat and basic food products instead of producing your own goods, basic goods such as wheat, corn, sugar, you know of these kinds of basics for the Egyptian people.

GF: You mentioned the price of bread as being… has always in Egypt been a political issue. Do you… do you think… do you anticipate that Egypt could be headed there again? This war does not appear like it's going to end anytime very soon. So, where will this end?

KD: It all depends how it's going to take, you know, weeks, months, nobody really knows. But I mean, I guess this time, maybe like people, or the government at least, can always have an external factor to blame the crisis on. They would say it's not because of our policies. It's not because we failed in certain aspects. It's the fact that there's a war going on, and we can't get enough wheat. But, you know, I mean that probably, we're not at this state yet. And I… as I mentioned earlier, it will show more when the reserve starts going down tremendously, which is expected to happen pretty soon. And then, there's also a fear that Egypt will devalue its currency because of the inflation. And this will also definitely add to the cost of importing wheat from outside in hard currency and dollars.

B.C. War Club

CH: Mark Lake spends a lot of time in his garden on Vancouver Island. And at this time of year, he's used to seeing new plants make an appearance. But last spring, the Royston resident found something altogether unfamiliar in the soil: an ancient Coast Salish war club. After some sleuthing, Mr. Lake managed to connect with Chief Nicole Rempel of the K'omoks First Nation -- and they've been working together to learn more about the rare club. Here's how they described the find -- and their collaboration.

SOUNDCLIP

MARK LAKE: As a retired guy, I spend a lot of time sort of just messing around in my backyard. And one day last April, I found this… what appeared to be a piece of wood sticking out from underneath a young maple tree, picked it up, dusted it off, put it on the side, didn't really think anything more of it. And a couple of days later, I… I washed it off and realized it was, I thought, a piece of prefabricated concrete or some… some industrial artifact and started to ask around and showed it to some friends. And a sculptor friend of mine looked at it and said, this is a labour of love. Many hours of work went into… into the creation of this. And it was then I realized we probably had something special, didn't really know what it was at the time. Hit the World Wide Web. My wife, Katie, has friends at the K'omoks Nation, and one of them saw a picture of it and was pretty excited. And that's how it all began.

NICOLE REMPEL: It was definitely exciting. I mean, I've worked with… with various people repatriating artifacts since 2013 for our Nation. And I hadn't seen a piece like this completely intact. You know, we've had a couple of broken war clubs in the past, mostly made out of whalebone. And so this piece was… was quite something to be returned to K'omoks. So it helps us understand more about our ancestors in the way that we lived, the tools that we created and as Mark said, you know, it takes quite a bit of time, you know, if you're thinking between 200 and 2,000 years ago, it truly must have been a labour of love to... to have made something so intricate and with so little tools. So, you know, it really gives us a bit more information about who we were, who are ancestors were, in the past. And you know, it's just an exciting time any time a cultural object is found and returned back to its rightful place. So often, we hear stories within our territory of people who eventually have come forward and shared an item, but they had hesitated for maybe 10-20 years because there's this misconception that something bad is going to happen if, you know, they disclose that they found an artifact. And that maybe the Nation will take their land or, you know, the government… you know, there'll be some government process. And really, it's just about documenting our history, where we were at a certain place and time. And it's just really… I just really encourage everyone that finds an artifact to… or ancestral remains for that matter, to reach out to the local Indigenous communities because it's… it's really just building our database of knowledge and identifying who we are and who we were.

ML And so that's… that's reward enough for us. And we've really enjoyed being part of the process.

Longest Car Restored

Guest: Mike Manning

CH: The American Dream is back. And it's more ridiculous than ever. I should clarify that I'm referring to a car called "The American Dream" -- the world's longest car, which was built in the 1980s. At the time, it was a huge hit, and it was awarded a Guinness World Record. But over the years it fell into disrepair. And that's where Mike Manning comes in. A decade ago, he saw the car on eBay. And after he spent years restoring it, The American Dream car is even longer than it was before. Mike Manning is the president of Autoseum, an automotive teaching museum. We reached him on Long Island, New York.

GF: Mike, I have seen a picture of this car. It is massive, and it's… it's a little hard to describe in words, but give it a shot. How would you describe this to people?

MIKE MANNING: The car, it's a massive car. It's… it's a third of a football field long. It can hold up to 75 people. It has 26 wheels. It's a front wheel drive car. Right now, it has one engine in it that pulls the whole car.

GF: Wow!

MM: It has two living room sets in it. It has a pool. It has a helipad. It has a putting green. Um --

GF: [‘chuckling] It sounds like it was built for a Russian oligarch.

MM: [laughing] Yeah, right? It could have been. Yeah, someone who is very wealthy, someone who wants to fly in on a helicopter and then jump in the pool. It originally had a hot tub inside the car, which we removed. But it's just you have to see it to believe it. When you see a picture of you say, oh, it's fake. But it's just… it's just so big. It's the length, like I said, it’s a third of a football field. And if you put a car up to it, an average car of just 16 feet, so you could just imagine how many cars you have to have there. That would be, you know, probably what, seven cars, approximately that you’d have to have next to it?

GF: Can you actually drive it?

MM: Yeah. Yeah, we drive it basically in a straight line. We can drive it, but we have to get it to like an airport, to drive it because you need a big turn radius to do it.

GF: No kidding! A hundred feet long!

MM: Yeah, it was never really built to be driven around. It was more of a showpiece.

GF: Uh-huh.

MM: Just to show that it can be done. And it was in a couple of movies and, you know, magazines and things like that.

GF: What kind of state was it in when you found it?

MM: It was like a zero out of a scale of one to 10, being zero is the worst. [chuckle]

GF: Yeah, a real mess?

MM: Yeah, it was rotted to the ground. It was graffitied. The windows were broken out of it. All the tires were flat, it didn't run. It just… you'd look at it and say, this is junk, just cut it up and get rid of it. But I always… I knew that it had some value, not so much the money value to it, but just a history. And I knew it couldn't be destroyed. And I tried to put it together with my students. And we started doing some work, but we just didn't have the finances to do it at the time. And then it just worked out. We lost our lease there. We had sold off some of our cars. And Mike Dezer entered the picture and he was able to finance it with his people and with the students to put it back together.

GF: And who's he?

MM: Mike Dezer is a real estate developer, and he owns a place in Orlando, Florida, called Dezerland Action Park. It's just under a million square feet of entertainment complex. In the next month or so, it's going to be brought into his building for everybody to see it.

GF: What kind of work went into restoring it?

MM: The work that went into it was we had purchased a couple of donor cars; three cars, and we had to replace the whole cab, which is where you drive it from. And then we took the other cars and we used a hood, we used the bumpers. We cut the back of the car off where the original Eldorado quarter panels were. And we put another section back there. Redid the roof, redid all the glass, the interior, the tires, the brakes, got the engine running, gas tank, lights.

GF: And it's actually a bit longer than it was originally now, right?

MM: Yeah, it's… [chuckle] it's only about an inch and a half longer, [GF chuckles] which we actually thought it was going to be longer than that. But it only came up when we did an official measurement by a certified surveyor.

GF: Uh-huh?

MM: It only came up an inch and a half longer, but it is still longer and it's… it broke its own record, so.

GF: Right.

MM: It's… it's, you know, it was restored. It's recertified as the longest car in the world. And now, it's longer than the longest car in the world [both chuckle]. So it is truly the longest car in the world.

GF: So obviously, a lot of work, and I can't imagine how much money to do this. But Mike, why? What was… what was the point? Why was this important to you?

MM: Well, it's important to me because it was just so unique. And when I seen it, I just… I just wanted to do it. It was something that was impossible. And I felt that I could do it. People thought I was crazy for even trying it. But, you know, you see it and you just don't want to let it go. You just… you just… like, you kind of look back on things when you grew up with nostalgia. And once they're gone, they're gone. So to be able to preserve something like that was… was very important.

GF: And it's going down to Florida now, you say?

MM: It's in Florida now. Yeah, it's… it's at its home right now. Guinness came. We had it outside. They did… you know, they recertified it. And then, they just released all the footage and stuff just now, so now we can talk about it. And in the next month or so, it's going to be brought into the building into its spot. They're getting it ready right now.

GF: Mm-Hmm. Do you think a lot of people will come see it?

MM: I think so, yeah. I really do. And then I had a very small operation in New York City and then people would come see it from all over the place.

GF: But it won't be in your life anymore. Your project's now done. How do you feel about that?

MM: I feel good. You know, it's a relief that it's done, but they'll… they'll be the next one. There'll be another project. You know, we talked about different projects already.

GF: Oh dear, I'm afraid to ask! What's the next one? What's the next one?

MM: We talked about making a life-size Hess truck.

GF: What's that?

MM: I don't know if you know what Hess trucks are? It's a gas station in United States and it's called… it was called Hess. And every year at Christmas time, they would have a truck that they would sell for Christmas for kids. And these are trucks that have helicopters on them, that have cars on the back of them. They're just enormous trucks. They're models, but there's no real one like it. So we're talking about building a life-sized Hess truck.

GF: There you go. Alrighty. Well, good luck with it.
