On Feb. 24, Russian forces invaded Ukraine, the culmination of Russian President Vladimir Putin's repeated ultimatums to the West after world leaders were unsuccessful in de-escalating geopolitical tension in the region.
Since then, Russian forces have attacked Ukraine on a variety of fronts, from the capital, Kyiv, to Kharkiv in the northeast to Mariupol on the Black Sea.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was premised, at least in part, on Putin's concern Ukraine would join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Putin has complained that since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Western military alliance has expanded eastward. Adding Ukraine would bring NATO right to Russia's doorstep, and one of Putin's ultimatums was that the alliance agree to never let Ukraine join.
Here's what NATO's borders in Europe currently look like.
