More suspects sought in 'horrendous' abuse of girl in Toronto crack den

Toronto police expect to lay more charges in the case of a mentally disabled girl who was allegedly given drugs andsexually assaulted by a string of menwhile living in a crack house with her mother.
Six men, ranging in age from 19 to 55, face sexual assault-related charges and the then-12-year-old girl's mother was charged with corrupting children. The investigation is ongoing but has been impeded because officers know other suspects only by their street names.
The charge laid against the mother, who cannot be identified to protect the girl, was so serious, police say, that investigators needed the permission of Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant to lay it.
Police said the alleged assaults happened when the girl was living with her mother in a Rexdale-area crack den between November 2005 and November 2006. The girl had cocaine in her system when she was taken from the house in January, police said.
"This is a very sad case, where we have a young girl who has some challenges of her own, to be put into that type of a surrounding and then to be used in a way that is certainly inappropriate," said Supt. Ron Taverner at a news conference Thursday evening.
Despite years of policing experience under his belt, Taverner was even uncomfortable discussing details of the case.
"The type of allegations that are being made with regard to the sexual activities that went on are something that I certainly don't want to describe but are certainly very horrendous," said Taverner.
The visiting men are said to be drug users or dealers who frequented thehouse in the northwest end of the city. Three ofthem have been released on bail. All are due back in court this September.
The now-13-year-old girl was put in the care of the Children's Aid Society and she hasbeen receivingmedical care.
