Temperatures will drop down to -24 C overnight and -18 C on Friday morning
The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued a cold weather alert in the London area for the second time in less than one week.
Windchill values are forecasted to reach -20 C and -24 C overnight, due to winter weather and strong winds. Friday morning is also expected to be a cold one, with a low of -18 C.
The cold weather alert will remain in effect until Friday afternoon when the daytime high is expected to reach up to -12 C after winds settle down.
The health unit issues an alert when Environment Canada forecasts lows beneath - 15 C and windchill values below -20 C.
"For the second time in a little less than a week, we're expecting weather and cold temperatures that can take a real negative toll on our bodies and on our health," said David Pavletic, MLHU's Environmental Health Manager.
Pavletic advised residents to limit the time they spend outdoors while the alert is in effect, to dress for the conditions and cover any exposed skin to prevent cold-related illness or injuries, if they do go outside.
Cold weather conditions can lead to frostbite on exposed skin. Hypothermia can also set in when a person's internal body temperature dips below normal.
