CBC hockey commentator Don Cherry, whose remarks have caused controversy in the past,was cheered and booedwhenhe made an appearance at the House of Commons Tuesday.

Cherry's introduction by Commons Speaker Peter Milliken wasn't even complete before the chamber erupted with loud cheers from some members of Parliament.

Beyond showing their appreciation for Cherry, they were also trying to drown out the loud boos coming from the Bloc Québécois and other Francophone MPs.

Liberal MP Jean Lapierrewas among those who objected to Cherry being introduced as a distinguished guest in the House.

Lapierre said Cherry has only distinguished himself by insulting French-Canadians.

In 1998, Cherry referred to Quebecers as "whiners" and called freestyle skier Jean-Luc Brassard "that French guy."In early 2004 Cherry stirred up controversyagain whenhe was criticizing hockey helmet visors, saying that"most of the guys that wear them are Europeans and French guys."

But Cherry said he wasn't bothered by the booing at the House.

"You can't please everybody. It's the same thing as Coach's Corner, you can't please everybody. But it was still great. I got the biggest ovation and that's all I care about."

He denied he was anti-French, despite his past remarks.

"Who's anti-French ? I know a lot of goodFrench guys [that]I like."

Cherry also met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper for an informal meeting. He saidHarper asked him to run in the next election.

"You know what I told him? I'm too great on television, I can't."
