Mona Fortier won riding with more than 50% of vote in last two elections
Voters in Ottawa-Vanier have been at the ballot box to elect a member of Parliament every two years since 2017.
But the riding, which contains a large Franco-Ontarian population, has been solidly red since 1933.
Mona Fortier won it with more than 51 per cent of the vote last time around, and also won it in the 2017 byelection.
Fortier is the minister of middle class prosperity, a new role created in 2019. In an interview with CBC Radio's The Current shortly after her appointment was made public, the Liberal MP defined her role as allowing Canadians to thrive by strengthening the economy — a prospect that likely looked different pre-pandemic.
Other candidates in this riding are:
- Crystelle Bourguignon of the Free Party,
- Canadian Forces reservist and Libertarian Party candidate Daniel Elford,
- lawyer and former Canadian Revenue Agency analyst Jean-Jacques Desgranges for the People's Party,
- the NDP's Lyse-Pascale Inamuco, who has been a co-chair of Women's March Ottawa and ran in the Cumberland ward byelection in 2020.
- Conservative Heidi Jensen, the founder of a firm that specializes in trademark protection and a longtime minor hockey volunteer,
- Independent candidate Marie-Chantal Leriche,
- and Christian Proulx of the Green Party, a plumber and construction worker.
