London, Ont., native captures Canada's 1st gold medal of Tokyo 2020
Maggie Mac Neil just won Canada's first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 when she looked up at the scoreboard.
She squinted as she then realized her name topped the list of swimmers competing in the women's 100-metre butterfly final.
An ordinary reaction — especially for those who wear glasses — after an extraordinary result.
Mac Neil became an Olympic champion in a Canadian-record time of 55.06 seconds.
From Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to musical group The Arkells, the nation rejoiced as the 21-year-old became Canada's first gold medallist in Tokyo.
In her first Olympics, the London, Ont., native already has two medals.
Mac Neil was part of the Canadian women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay team that won silver.
