Police say students and staff at Balmoral Hall School are safe
A school was locked down for a short period of time, and police are asking people to avoid part of Winnipeg's West Broadway area after a man was shot.
Police tweeted at about 4 p.m. CT that numerous police units are in the area of Young and Balmoral streets.
They tweeted that a man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound, but wouldn't give his condition.
The nearby school, Balmoral Hall, was locked down briefly, but all students and staff are safe, police say.
"Parents can safely pick up students by taking Westminster directly to the front parking lot. Please stay off Furby St," the tweet said.
Winnipeg police wouldn't answer additional questions and directed CBC News to Twitter for more updates.
Olivia Ulrich lives nearby and says she heard four loud bangs that sounded like gunshots and people screaming so she called 911.
"It was so loud and it felt like it shook my apartment," she said.
Ulrich went outside to check out the situation and saw a man who was obviously hurt.
"It was like a blood-curdling scream and then someone said, 'Call 911, call 911,'" she recalled.
David Imrie also heard the shots, and then tires squealing.
"When I went out to the front of the building I saw the poor guy lying on the street bleeding and surrounded by five or six people. A nurse came along and she gave him CPR until the police arrived," he said.
