Quebecers owe it to seniors to be patient with public health restrictions, premier says
- Quebec reported 792 new cases on Wednesday and 10 more deaths.
- Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 294,652 confirmed cases and 10,503 people have died.
- There are 581 people in hospital (an increase of five), including 112 in intensive care (an increase of two).
- 18,101 doses of vaccine were administered on Tuesday. A total of 599,833 people have been vaccinated since Dec. 14.
All Quebecers who are at least 70 years old can now book an appointment for their COVID-19 shot.
Since the province started administering doses to the general population, the minimum age requirement for registration has varied from region to region.
The vaccination campaign is picking up, and the premier says public health officials are looking at how to eventually roll back restrictions across the province, but he added that they can't get ahead of themselves until the bulk of the province's seniors are vaccinated.
"I understand that the population can be fed up," Legault said Tuesday. "But our leaders have a responsibility, and there's a solidarity we need to have with our elders who built Quebec."
On Tuesday, Health Minister Christian Dubé outlined how vaccines that are currently available will be used: Pfizer-BioNTech at mass vaccination sites, Moderna at pharmacies and AstraZeneca-Oxford for home visits.
This week, the province will mark the one-year anniversary of when Quebec began introducing measures to deal with the pandemic.
If you have been feeling isolated, we've compiled some ways to help cope as part of a special CBC Quebec project called Out of the Dark: Real Talk on Mental Health.
