New Democrat blasts own party over nomination irregularities

A longtime member of the Manitoba NDP alleges that his own party has been offering another member a government job in exchange for not seeking the party's nomination in a north Winnipeg riding in advance of an expected election next year.
Gurmeet Gill, a 25-year member and formermember of the provincial party's executive, said Tuesday that Premier Gary Doer's chief of staff offered NDP member Kaur Sidhu, a Winnipeg pharmacist, a high-profile position with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in exchange for staying out of the nomination race in the Maples riding.
Sidhu had wanted to contest the party's nomination in that riding, currently held by NDP MLA Cris Aglugub. Sidhu has since withdrawn from that race.
"They offered him a WRHA job on board and that [would] be good for him," charged Gill, who said he went with Sidhu to the meeting in which the job was allegedly offered.
"In my opinion ... they offered him [the job] because he shouldn't run in the Maples," Gill said
A spokesperson for the premier's office told CBC News on Tuesday that Gill's remarks are currently just allegations, and thatall such matters are forwarded to Elections Manitoba.
But Gill's comments were in line withthe suspicions of Liberal MLA Kevin Lamoureux (Inkster), who had been raising that very issue in the Manitoba legislature in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Lamoureux was even kicked out of the legislative chamber during question period when he accused Doer of "deceit" in connection with what he called irregularities in the NDP'sMaples nomination process.
"It's somewhat encouraging to see someone like that [Gill], who I know is a very strong New Democrat [and] is doing what I believe is the right thing," Lamoureux said Tuesday.
