The P.E.I. government is looking for new works to go into the provincial art bank.

Artists may submit one or two pieces for consideration, and the selections will be adjudicated by an independent jury.

The art bank was established 42 years ago, and now includes more than 250 pieces from about 120 artists.

"It's a working collection," said Michelle MacCallum, provincial director of cultural development.

Six new pieces have been purchased for the provincial art bank, bringing the total in the collection to 255.

Monica Lacey has had several pieces selected for the art bank over the years. Her latest, Optimism, is mixed media — acrylic, ink, collage and encaustic on wood panel.

Province puts up $100K to get more art into public places on P.E.I.

The P.E.I. government has set aside $100,000 over the next two years to develop a public art policy for the province.

Michelle MacCallum, director of cultural development with Innovation PEI, says public art delights, engages and sometimes challenges people when they come upon it.

"The art is displayed in public buildings across P.E.I. So you would see it in public buildings, you might see it in libraries, Access PEI buildings, places like that."

Submitted artwork must be ready to be displayed publicly, and therefore it needs to be visual art. Most of the collection is paintings and fine crafts, said MacCallum.

The call for submission is open until March 12.

P.E.I. woman suffers cuts after flying ice smashes through car windshield

A P.E.I. woman is encouraging others to clean off their vehicles after a chunk of ice smashed through a windshield, causing glass fragments to spray into her face.

'I’ll never forget that sound. And thinking, ‘this is it.’ And glass fragments just shattering and spewing everywhere,' says Norma MacEachern.

Norma MacEachern suffered some cuts when ice from another vehicle dislodged and slammed through the windshield of a car where she was a passenger.

The P.E.I. Art Bank is once more open to submissions from professional artists. The CBC P.E.I.'s John Robertson took a closer look at the art on display and why the government is supporting local artists in this way.
