Toronto police say two officers were seriously injured when a man attacked them with a butcher knife after they knocked on a door in the city's northwest end.

Both officers were taken to hospital and have been treated and released. They are recovering at home.

Police said officers used a conductive energy weapon before making an arrest.

The accused, 33, did not suffer any injuries. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, weapons dangerous, assault with intent to resist arrest.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Police initially said on Twitter the officers were responding to a "check address call" in the Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West area shortly after 11 a.m.

Now, they say the officers were searching for a missing 56-year-old man named Nathaniel Brettell at the time and that he has still not been found.

Police say they are concerned for Brettell's safety and that he was last seen on Jan. 21 in the nearby Westona Street and Dixon Road area.

In a news release late Wednesday, police said four officers went to area to check on his well-being when the attack occurred in a common area of the residence.

Despite having limited information, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said they were concerned about the officers' health and wished them a quick recovery during a provincial COVID-19 update.
