Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Margaret Atwood were among the 2020 Goodreads Readers Choice Award winners.
The Goodreads Readers Choice Awards are given out in 20 categories across several genres and are voted on by readers.
More than five million votes were cast in 2020.
Moreno-Garcia won in the horror category for Mexican Gothic.
In Mexican Gothic, a young woman named Noemi Taboada is called by her cousin to save her from doom in her countryside home. Set in 1950s Mexico, this gothic horror novel is a haunted house story underpinned with themes of feminism and class commentary.
Atwood won the poetry category for Dearly.
Dearly is Atwood's first poetry collection in over a decade. The collection gathers poems about "absences and endings, aging and retrospection... gifts and renewals" and draws from the natural and supernatural world.
This is the second year in a row Atwood has won a Goodreads Readers Choice Award. Last year, her novel The Testaments won in the fiction category.
Mexican Gothic and Dearly were the only Canadian book to win a Goodreads Readers Choice Award this year. Ten Canadian titles were nominated in 2020.
