The number of active cases is on the rise, with 81 people in the city having COVID-19 on Tuesday
Hamilton has officially passed its 1,000th case of COVID-19 almost half a year since public health first detected the virus in the city.
There are 1,003 cases as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, as the virus continues to spread within the community (81 per cent of cases in the last 10 days came from community spread).
The number of active infections is on the rise, too.
Hamilton Public Health knows of 82 people with the virus. That count is up by 15 since roughly the same time last week — a worrying sign given that schools are to reopen in days.
Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, the city's medical officer of health, previously told CBC the virus is bound to enter schools, but that public health and school boards have put many safeguards in place.
The number of COVID-19 deaths in the city also hasn't budged in a while. The virus has killed 45 people, most of whom stayed in long-term care homes. The majority of locals being infected now range from 10 to 30 years old, a group that normally doesn't experience the worst of the virus.
About 87 per cent of all locals who had the virus have recovered. Public heath has noted there also could be others who had the virus but never showed symptoms, never got tested and were never accounted for.
One hundred and forty-eight people have had to stay in hospital to fight off COVID-19 since March but no more than five people are still in hospital at Hamilton Health Sciences.
